Vintage Trading Cards
A trading card (or collectible card) is a small card, usually made out of cardboard or thick paper, which usually contains an image of a certain person (fictional or real) and a short description of the picture, along with other text (statistics, attacks, or trivia). There is wide variation among different types of cards as to the configuration of objects, the content on the card, and even the material used to make the card.
Trading cards are traditionally associated with sports; baseball cards are especially well-known.Cards dealing with other subjects are often considered a separate category from sports cards, known as non-sports trading cards. These often feature cartoons, comic book characters, television series, or movie stills.
As with playing cards, which they generally resemble, trading cards are often used to play various games. In the 1990s, cards designed specifically for playing games became popular enough to develop into a distinct category of collectible card games. These tend to use either fantasy subjects or sports as the basis for gameplay.
Origin
From approximately 1887 to 1901, small cloth strips were circulated with the names of baseball players on them. These original cards were very rare, and are worth up to 800 USD today.
From 1902 to 1935, printed cardboard baseball cards originated as gimmicks distributed with tobacco products, bubble gum, and other snacks (similar to prizes in cereal boxes today). During this period, there was wide variation in the production of cards, mostly because the style was new and distributors had not yet decided on a particular style. Many cards also had rare flaws and misprints because manufacturers were still experimenting with different production methods.
After 1936, most of the card manufacturers had decided on a certain style, and most cards remained the same. The cards themselves ceased to be packaged along with other products and became a product in their own right.
Today, the development of the Internet has given rise to various online communities, through which members can trade collectible cards with each other. Cards are often bought and sold via eBay and other online retail sources.

Pelican 0910-010-110 Secure Digital Memory Card CaseReviewsNice case, very well made. There are a total of 4 inserts plus one optional tray insert to use if you remove 2 existing inserts. One of the existing inserts is for Mini SDs only which I will discard. Ordered a second case to get the missing insert and I will use the optional tray on the second case. This is overkill for sure. But since I have made the investment in 4 8gb cards how could I not? Good protection, well made, solid. Cards have not moved and I keep in backpack which is constantly thrown around. My cards are safe and secure. Highly recommend. Definitely worth the money. Very sturdy case, custom inserts hold SD or mini SD, or you can buy a compact flash one. Made of quality materials, doesn't feel like it will break, and it is waterproof. Would tell anyone to get one over some flimsy cheap plastic one. Worthy of the Pelican name. Only thing it could use is a way to toss a small lock on it to deter people from getting into it if your using it for camera memory and such. I love this case. My cards fit right in the cutouts and they fit snug enough so I don't have worry about them coming loose. The case is hard so that if I drop it or accidentally step on or put something heavy on it I don't have to worry about my memory cards being damaged or destroyed. Does just what I need it to do. I received this case as promised as was impressed with the construction and functionality. The SDHC cards fit and stay exactly where I put them. I haven't water tested this case but have dropped it from several different heights and it is holding up great. You could probably drive a tank over this case and your cards would be protected. I definitely will be buying more as my library of SDHC cards grows. Average Rating:![]() |

Ace Trading - Yu Shan Tw Hd2001"living Accents" "5-piece" Card Table SetReviewsI'm very pleased with the table and chairs. The size is exactly what I needed and the color is very nice. The only thing I didn't like was that the shipping was sort of slow (over 2 weeks). We received the card table and chairs, but the quality is not what we expected. The chairs are not very sturdy and the cushioning is minimual. They are also uncomfortable to sit it. We are returning them to the seller and hopefully find a more high quality set. I am willing to pay more for high quality; perhaps I am just not familiar with the price/quality ratios when it comes to card tables and folding chairs. I may have expected too much for the price. World Poker Tour - Season TwoReviewsThe Hottest thing on TV in 2005-06 was POKER if you could have believed that, seems a long time ago when every channel had Poker on, you had Celebrity Poker challenge, the Woods gang Poker chanllenge, Ultimate Poker challenge, World series of Poker and Ciruit events, hiphop poker, Poker Superstars I-III, but the grandaddy of them all was......the World Poker Tour hands down! Extremely well produced, great 2 hour episodes, great featurettes from Shana each week, yah the WPT was an icon back a few years ago. Now its subpar as no names fill the final tables now and reduced to 1 hour "to be continued" next week episodes. Get Poker at oits best...get Season 2 of the WPT! I HOPE YOU LOVE POKER THIS SET IS FOR YOU 1 NEW EVENT A 3 TIME WPT CHAMPION IS CROUND A LOT OF THE SAME PEOPLE EACH WEEK LOOK OUT FOR LOVE OVER SEAS IN ONE TURMENT THE BLUFFS ANE MORE FUN TO WATCH This is by far the best of the first three seasons DVDs. The production quality is good and the play is great. I found the entire thing brand new for under ten dollars here on Amazon, so keep an eye out for a good deal. TIP: If you have not seen the season already or do not remember much about the matches, DO NOT read the back of the "final table" DVD or anything that will tell you who is playing on that last championship table. I made the mistake of browsing the back of the cases and didn't realize until I was watching the season opener that I knew who was going to win. Kinda took something out of it. Just a thought. The best poker tournament DVD, very good action from the pro players, beaultiful places over the world, it pays the price!!! This set is packed with many of the world's greatest players, plus some highly entertaining oddballs ("The island of Crete!") and plenty of quality poker. The commentaries are great, indeed the set is worth buying just to hear Daniel Negreanu's impersonation of Gus Hansen telling one of his poker stories. They do a good job of including some of the the more normal hands and not just the more dramatic ones. While these dvds do a remarkable job, considering the amount of tournaments they cover and by necessity have to concentrate on the final tables, it would be great to see play from earlier in the tournament, as we rarely get to see how the pros handle this different style of play. Also why not have a commentary track on every tournament? The hosts, Mike Sexton, Vince Van Patten and Shana Hyatt are consistently affable, amusing and glamorous throughout, and it is easy to watch the discs again and again. Average Rating:![]() |

Ring of Honor: Stars of HonorReviewsLet me start off by saying this is one of the three dvds that made me a ROH fan. Samoa Joe vs CM Punk : Umm wow this is a great match and I think it's one of the top 10 matches in ROH history these work it to a tee they do have one match which is a little better but imo I like this one just as much Homicide vs Antonio Banks (MVP) Ok my least favorite match on the dvd as it just doesn't have much goin for it and the crowd doesn't really care for it at all James Gibson vs Roderick Strong If you havn't seen Jamie Noble go in the ring in a flat out wrestling match then this is for you as it's a pretty good match but Roderick has a better match on this dvd so just wait for the best of him Bryan Danielson vs Spanky I'm in love with this match it shows how good spanky really is and show why Danielson is one of the best in the world must see match again Matt Hardy vs Homicide This is a pretty good match between these two and is very watchable but it is overshadowed by the next match Matt Hardy vs Roderick Strong This is the best match I've seen with Matt Hardy in a 1 on 1 match these two put on a great match that is really worth watching if you're a Matt fan but heck I'm not a huge fan of him and I love this match Christopher Daniels vs Christian Cage This is another very good match but it may not reach your full expectations but it is very good and ages well Samoa Joe and Jay Lethal vs Low Ki and Homicide Mainstearm fans will love this match because it is really booked to where every wrestling fan would love it and I don't know someone who hadn't seen any ROH before I showed them some matches this one included and they say this stuff is great So enjoy as you just get some of the best wrestling in the world This is the best dvd to pick up if you want to know how some of today's new stars began. This is also a good dvd to show you some of today's stars actually wrestle, unrestricted, and with full potential. I'll put it to you like this: for an ROH retail dvd, it's a dvd to own. For a general wrestling dvd, it's a dvd to own. If you're a fan of Samoa Joe, C.M. Punk, Homicide, Jay Lethal, Matt Hardy, or even remotely a fan of MVP The Brian Kendrick, or Jamie Noble, this is a dvd to own. Yes, I took a TNA catchphrase and applied it to a wrestling company that actually lived by the tag line. Most fans of mainstream promotions will not have heard of Ring of Honor, yet the promotion has given birth to some of the biggest stars of WWE and TNA. CM Punk, MVP, Samoa Joe, Jay Lethal, Homicide and others were all born out of ROH so I guess we owe the company a thank you. Those not familiar with the history of the promotion, let me give you a quick overview. The promotion was first founded in 2002 by Rob Feinstein, but was later bought out by Cary Silkin who is the current owner. Their match booker, Gabe Sapolsky was a man trained in his craft by the one and only Paul Hayman. Let me be honest and say Hayman has taught Gabe well as he has never but on a bad wrestling show. Their first show "Era of Honor Begins" was held in Philadelphia and featured such names as Super Crazy, Eddy Guerrero, Brian Danielson and Low Ki. This gave us a 3 hour non-stop wrestling show that took the hardcore ECW fans and new wrestling fans alike and said "Don't worry, wrestling isn't dead yet." Since 2002 ROH has grown into a promotion able to hold successful shows around the world including Japan and the UK. This DVD along with the other three are their first widely released DVDs as previously their show DVDs have only ever been sold on their website or other wrestling related websites. This DVD along with the other three showcases the talent of ROH to a wider audience and Stars of Honor is the place to begin. With the match list it showcases some of the best matches from the company featuring their biggest talents. Special features include appearances from legends Bruno Sammartino and Mick Foley. Below is the match list for this DVD that I promise you wont be disappointed with. 1. Samoa Joe vs. CM Punk -12/4/04 (features new commentary) 2. Homicide vs. Antonio "MVP" Banks- 2/19/05 (features new commentary) 3. James (Noble) Gibson vs. Roderick Strong- 4/2/05 (features new commentary) 4. Bryan Danielson vs. Brian "Spanky" Kendrick- 4/2/05 (features new commentary) 5. Matt Hardy vs. Homicide- 8/12/05 6. Matt Hardy vs. Roderick Strong- 8/13/05 7. Christopher Daniels vs. Christian Cage- 7/29/06 8. Samoa Joe & Jay Lethal vs. Low Ki & Homicide - 8/13/05 Very good DVD that for any wrestling fan is a must own. I recently purchased this DVD from ROH and I have to say that I was completely blown away from the quality foe the maches that I saw on this DVD. All the matches that are on here were outstanding, with my favorite being the one between Bryan Danielson & Spanky. I definitely recommend this DVD to anyone who is a fan of Professional Wrestling, not "sports entertainment". This is a great DVD and really shows the great wrestlers that have come out of ROH. Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Stardust Accelerator World Championship Tournament 2009ReviewsThis game was for my 9 year old. I love that it's keeping him entertained longer than other games. The levels get hard, but not too hard where he would lose interest in the game. Sure, he gets frustrated, but after leaving it for a while he's back at it and accomplishes the level. Although I don't like him to spend his day playing games, I do like that he gets to figure out problems on his own and thus gets a sense of accomplishment. It's not for children that don't have patience as each level brings new, harder problems that take time to learn and react. If you are a fan: pros: The UI for the duel is well done. The numbers of cards are great. You can duel with almost every NPC. Races (very simplistic) Other modes (havent played them yet) cons: Beginner deck is weak. forbidden cards you have to see a card before you can actually use the code of it. If you are not a fan: Look for something else. The graphics, the sound & story are lame. The duels are more than five minutes each so you can get bored fast cause the game is about that. This is an awesome game but the first boss is too freakin' HARD! Lenny with his bug deck...in two turns everytime I battle him he has 2 monsters over 2500 ATK points on the field and I never get lucky enough to draw Mirror Force or any other trap that would help me. If he's that hard I can't imagine the other bosses. My son really loves this game although it takes a long time to build a deck to be able to play on line.He plays it a lot well worth the $$$ for a yu-gi-oh fan. This game is great for people who love yugioh. It has a majority of cards untill after Rise of Crisis pack but some minor cards are missing that woulnd't even be missed. probably the best thing abuot this game is the ability to play with others on the wifi and how the rules and ban lish can be updated. Bella SaraReviewsThis is from my daughter: Likes: * getting pocket money because I can spend it on expensive stuff in the store like clothes and tack for horses * getting trading cards so I could get horses * free-ride areas were fun, where you can get trading cards and horseshoes that act like pocket money Dislikes: * could not change appearance of the person in the game so it could look like me. * got tired of cleaning the horses over and over again to progress The game is fun and I play it every day. I enjoy explaining it to my younger sister who doesn't many DS games. She helps me clean the horses. It is a pretty good game. I only rated it a 4 because it is very unrealistic. there are nine spots of dirty hay that you replace with clean hay, but it is in the corner of the stall, what good is that? And one horse flys, which is actually pretty neat. After about seven to ten hours, you collect all the cards and get all the horses, and there is nothing to do. Overall it is a good game. The game on Nintendo DS is the next best thing to playing it on the computer. She loves the game and plays it all the time. It is also a game that she can play by herself. I would highly recommend this game & I hope they make another one to go along with it. I bought this DS game for my 7 year old grandaughter for Christmas. She has collected the trading cards for about a year now, so when I saw that Nintendo had a Bella Sara game I knew I had to purchase it. And she was so excited, her mother says she plays with it all the time. I bought the game for my daughter who is really into horses right now. Bella Sara is her favorite on-line game, and now she can take it with her wherever she goes! She was really excited about the card that came with the game because it gave her access to a new horse on her on-line game. The graphics are so real! Very detailed and beautiful! All in all, it was her favorite Christmas gift! Average Rating:![]() |

Pokemon - Trading Card GameReviewsIt is very hard and confusing. Gets boring after a while. Get something newer like a ds or dsi pokemon game. This game was the classic sequel to the Win95 CD-Rom version of the game. The young adults who were fans of the TCG when they were kids would love this game. For the new fans of the TCG, this could be a history lesson on how it all began. The game follows a similar pattern to the rpg-style Pokemon games: 8 gym leaders and one final Champion. This game has high replay value due to its gbc-link compatible fighting and trading system. And collectors can enjoy the challenge of getting all the cards. My rating: 4/5 There are 3 games to play, but for one of them you need 2 gameboys and 2 cartridges. For another one, you just walk around through buildings and do absolutely nothing. In the other one, you just make a deck but it has to have 60 cards in it and only one deck has 60 cards in it. This game is really confusing, especially if you don't have the instructions. Don't buy it! The game is awesome! Don't let the other reviews fool you-you don't even notice the "faults" when you play b/c this game is so fun! I would reccomend this to anyone-even if you hate pokemon. It's that good. Now go get it! The first time I got this game I didn't like it very much. Then I let one of my friends borrow it and he never brought it back. Then I got it again in hopes of beating some people. So I walked into the Rock Club to defeat the master there and he told me I had to go find his pupils first. So I found two of them and I still can't find the others. I even went on a cheat website and I followed where it says she is and she's not there! This game is really boring. I mean really. Playing the TCG in real life is way more fun. Average Rating:![]() |

Magellan 2009 One-Time U.S. Map Update for Magellan GPS Navigators (SD Card)ReviewsI can only review the first 2 parts. THe installation was pretty easy but you must update your GPS software before doing the map update. One MAJOR point is that the instructions say you know the update has been successful when it ask you to enter your region. THis never happened for me. I had to take the map card out reboot and find the map information section to see the #'s for the maps originally were on the unit. Turn it off install the new card and turn it on and reset using the reset button then check the map information to see that the #'s did change. Other then that it was easy enough. I am pretty good with techy stuff so i was only slightly annoyed but some of the older generation might have to call the tech support to figure this out. Even though I purchased my Magellan from Amazon and then purchsed the Map Update Card from Amazon, I receive an "Incompatible" message when I insert the card. Returned for refund. This update was needed for using on the East Coast from the West Coast...streets and highways... We live in San Antonio, TX and the last update available (2008) did not include many of the new roads and highway ramps recently completed in the area (especially the highway ramps connecting 281 and 410, and much of the new construction in the north end of town). This update has those ramps and a large majority of the new construction recently completed. I wish there was a way to "sample" a map update prior to purchase (i.e.: being able to enter a location and verifying it's accuracy), to ensure you don't waste $$$ purchasing an update that really doesn't help (like the 2008 update for me). Thus 3 stars for "improved performance". At the time of the 2008 update, Google maps had many of the new roads/ramps, so I figured that update would to. Search around on Google for better prices, as I paid a lot less than is currently advertised on Amazon. As info, I am using the Maestro 3250. Nice and easy to use and get going with. Just wish it was free lol Average Rating:![]() |

Delorme Map Library Subscription Card for use with Topo USA 8.0 and Earthmate PN SeriesReviewsThis review is for the Delorme Map Library Subscription Card. I have started downloading additional charts, maps, and images to use on the computer and on the handheld pn-40. Using the software is easy. The downloads can be slow and fail ten percent of the time, but after applying all Topo version 8 fixes, download failures have almost gone away. When downloading charts you can do 5 at a time and this may be good because of the download time. A better index of charts would be helpful, but this is making my handheld GPS into a chart plotter. Over all this is a good value to go along with the Delorme software and handheld GPS. The interface for cutting your maps makes it hard to download large areas. This is very inefficient for example with the Canadian map packages. Sure its a great deal but you have to be willing to do hours worth of work to download the maps you want. It would be nice if they just had a topo map package of Canada. That said the aerial downloads for U.S. and hi resolution city imagery are amazing. If you alrady have any of the Topo maps all you have to do is place the code in the appropriat place and off you go. Great product to have if you like to download maps to your GPS or just download them. If you could actually download the maps successfully, this would be a great deal...but Delorme seems to place a 13-20kbps limit on the download (that's in addition to the prep time required between placing the order and the data being available for download). Consider that a 35sq mi aerial set will be around 500mb, you can see how virtually unusable this service is. Delorme support is slow and not particularly responsive. Topo USA software is a bit buggy, especially when it comes to acquiring the maps, and the SP1 they pointed me to a week after I submitted the ticket (the software didn't alert me via its update notification) didn't really fix the problem. Searches on the support site for the error messages and issues weren't very fruitful either. This card is a one year subscription to an all-you-can-eat buffet of Delorme's on-line maps. Topo USA 8.0 National Edition has a tab in the software called NetLink which when you're connected on-line allows you to download maps from DeLorme's fabulous collection once this software license key is installed. You can choose from USGS 1:24K scanned quads, Color DOQQ Aerial Imagery, NOAA charts, SAT 10 satellite imagery, USGS DOQQ aerial imagery, and in 133 cities USGS Hi-Resolution aerial imagery. As an avid off-road adventure seeker the scanned 1:24K maps are a wonderful supplement to the included maps of Topo USA 8.0 and the black and white SAT 10 imagery helps in some complicated areas to determine the actual path of the trail. You are limited to a certain amount of area to download at a time, with my 1:24K maps I keep it down under 100 blocks of map for a reasonable download size. The downloads vary with the data type and I highly recommend a high-speed Internet connection. The same areas of the maps can be downloaded for use with the DeLorme handheld GPS systems like the DeLorme Earthmate PN-40 Handheld GPS (1:100k Topographic, Detailed Street Maps & POIs Included). DeLorme is a map data company first and this is money well spent to get into their wealth of map knowledge. Average Rating:![]() |

Garmin City Navigator for Detailed Maps of Italy and Greece (microSD/SD Card)ReviewsIt was great to have a GPS in Italy and the price of the SD card was fine. I was using a Garmin 760 GPS unit that works very well in the US. Nevertheless, I discovered that you should not expect it to work as well as it does with your US map. Too often, I found myself passing the exit before I could identify it from the GPS instructions. Probably, that was sometimes my own fault in trying to understand the mispronounced Italian street names that were identified with too much information--sort of like trying to read the overhead route directions that contained directions to several places, all in a foreign language. The quirkiness of the guidance was annoying. For example, on one occasion I was on on a major road (comparable to an interstate road in the US) and the GPS said to drive on it for 60 miles. I knew that to be correct, having been on the road before. I drove about 10 miles at about 80 miles an hour (yet being passed by the other drivers). Suddenly, the GPS started telling me to "go 500 yards and make a legal U-turn." I knew I had another 50 miles to go so I ignored that instruction (and it was a physical impossibility to make a U-turn on such a road). For another 5 minutes, it kept telling me to make that U-turn, after which it stopped doing so and reflected the fact that I had another 45 miles to go to my destination. Despite these issues, I recommend the SD card for anyone driving in Italy. Overall, it did its job, and if you realize it is quirky, you will be OK. It is not perfect, but it is better than trying to read foreign maps and asking for directions when there is a language barrier. If nothing else, its pronunciation of Italian street names will keep you amused. I bought this for a trip to italy and wish i didnt waste the money. The maps were outdated. It tried sending us on roads that didnt exist and didnt have many of the paved public roads that we were driving on. I just received this product and it took 3 hours to get it to work on a 60csx. The manual consists of 1 3"x 3" page in English of which 1/3 is a warning and 1/3 is a legal disclaimer. I'm still in the States but from what I can see the maps are very good, with plenty of useful POI's. This chip did not work with Garmin Mapsource or Garmin Map installer. Insert the chip into the unit and figure it out from there. Meaning as far as I can tell, no PC tie in. In my opinion Garmin makes the best mapping product on the market. Which is a shame because they are consistently overpriced with minimal support. It takes hours on line to see how useful their products can be. Which can be a little scary when you can't get on line. Great item! I don't know how I would have gotten though Northern Italy without it! I stayed at some smaller hotels on little streets and it was no problem. The only reason I did not give it a five star is because it included no written instructions. It was exactly as expected and helped me get all around Athens. I did not use it around other areas of Greece or at all in Italy (yet). With it's network of roads downtown it was able to get me from point A to point B knowing the one-way streets. The only drawback was that it doesn't react as quickly as I hoped as it has to read from the SD card so there are slight delays. I think it's great because you can go off the beaten path and know you can get to your destination. Average Rating:![]() |

The Lord of the Rings: Motion Picture Trilogy Soundtrack (3CD & 18 Trading Cards)ReviewsHorner is a new person in soundtrack composing, but I think he described with sounds exactly what Tolkien means about all scenes in his book "the lord of the rings", as also did Jackson with the direction of the movies. Tolkien was not so easy to understand sometimes for me, now I know more than I could believe, I understand all the people and their stories in this wonderfull saga. Thank You to the good e-seller for the good price I bought the package, this was a great idea too: a special price for a special movie trilogy. Thank You again Veronica This 3 CD collection contains all the standard soundtracks for Lord of the Rings. So Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and Return of the King are all here, one disc each, in a box designed by Alan Lee I believe. In addition to all 3 single-disc soundtracks, you get all the 'collector' cards (sometime when a soundtrack CD for a major film event is released there are 5 or 6 different character covers you get to choose from). This release is recommended for someone who does not own any Lord of the Rings soundtrack, as you get all three in one shot for a pretty good price, or for the casual listener. For REAL fans of either Lord of the Rings or film score, I suggest looking into the the Complete Recordings as it is essentially listening to the film. However, my favorite is the Fellowship of the Rings and if I had it to do over, I would just get the first one. What can I say that hasn't already been said about Howard Shore's magnificent score for the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy? A soundtrack can define the whole atmosphere of a film, and this fully orchestrated work certainly does that with sweep, splendor and wonder, alternately humanizing (hobbit-izing?) the characters, imbuing the landscape with magic and capturing the world-shaking impact of events of mythic proportions. And this was no easy task considering the iconoclastic status of the story and the superb quality of Peter Jackson's filmmaking. This is a truly a soundtrack for the ages--a fitting accompaniment to a film for the ages! Every aspect of life, from the extreme to the mundane, is captured in this music. Listening to it can make every remembered moment of the movie come alive again in your mind, from the most horrific battle to the smallest moment of humor or kindness. I think "The Fellowship of the Ring" is my favorite of the three "Lord of the Rings" soundtracks. I enjoy the juxtaposition of the lighter moments, like the sweet, simple hobbit theme, with the grander and more menacing sections of the music. What impressed me most as I watched "The Fellowship of the Ring" was how scary the music was when the hobbits were being pursued. Those relentless drums and eerily screaming drums made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, even though I knew the story like the back of my hand and knew for a fact that the poor little heroes would manage to escape. But the music truly made me wonder otherwise ... Now that's good composition! And the fact that the filmmakers chose to include background music in so many of the scenes, almost continuously ... well, that's just good filmmaking! The other impressive thing about Howard Shore's score is how the voicing and the repeating musical motifs tie the whole thing together, like the finest of symphonies. In "The Two Towers" all the familiar themes from the first sound track return, reinvented as need be to link the films together while adapting to new developments in the action and the story. In this album, I particularly like the hardanger fiddle-infused theme for the Rohirrim, the Viking-like horse-riders of the steppes, and the ponderous, quirky music for Treebeard, the walking, talking tree. I would have enjoyed a bit more of these distinctive elements, which lend levity and diversity to a sometimes depressing and overwhelmingly intense body of music. Here, they make all-too-brief appearances, at least from a listener's point of view. But soundtracks are ultimately slaves to the script, and in conjunction with the film itself, the timing and phrasing of Shore's music is impeccable. Mysterious, menacing, folksy or heroic, the total effect is utterly convincing and utterly transporting. The battle scenes in "Return of the King" are incredible visuals, blending live action and computer-generated imagery so seamlessly and densely that it boggles the mind. But what would they be with only screams and snorts and scuffles to give them voice? It's Shore's frenetic, string-laden, brass-filled, drum-spurred fury that truly gives them life, waxing, waning and cueing the audience as to when the greatest menace is about to threaten the war-weary heroes. The musical themes from the first two movies continue to be developed here, wending their way in and out of expanded interpretations whose dense complexity rivals that of Tolkien's story, not to mention Peter Jackson's filmmaking itself. Jackson chose well when he picked Shore as his score writer. Very, very well! Make sure to get the extended edition DVDs of the movies themselves, with hours and hours of fascinating commentaries and behind-the-scenes documentaries about the making of the films. Truly a bargain at any price! For more seminal soundtracks, try John William's defining scores for the "Star Wars" series and Basil Poledouris's spectacular score for the original "Conan the Barbarian." You can hear more hardanger fiddle music (the inspiration for the Rohan/Rohirrim themes) in the work of Scandinavian fiddler Annbjorg Lien or any of the varied releases from the NorthSide label. Finally, for authentic music from bygone ages, why not try the real thing? There are many fine early music groups out there. Here's just a sampling: Anonymous 4 (pure-voiced sacred chant by four women), The Baltimore Consort (jaunty popular music from the Renaissance), David Munrow's Early Music Consort of London (simply perfection), Christian Mendoze's Musica Antiqua (lively, percussive Renaissance dance music), The Toronto Consort (great variety), Ensemble Unicorn (worlds of fun!), Wolgemut (brash buzzies and bagpipes with attitude), and the magical early/folk fusion of Cantiga and Burlap Lute. Have some fun with them and live your own fantasy! This soundtrack is absolutely awsome! I had heard pieces of it, but did not listen to all of it until this past May. I ended up with two of my best friends sitting on our high school stage about two hours before our musical listening to this soundtrack and eating Chinese food. By the time we were finished, we had listened to a ton of the soundtrack and were probably five times calmer than we had been when we started. We ended up doing the same thing the following night, and have decided to make it a tradition. Average Rating:![]() |
