Dolls
A doll is an object that represents a baby or other human being, but includes likenesses of animals and imaginary creatures. Dolls have been around since the dawn of human civilization, and have been fashioned from a vast array of materials, ranging from stone, clay, wood, bone, cloth and paper, to porcelain, china, rubber and plastic.
While dolls have traditionally been toys for children, they are also collected by adults, for their nostalgic value, beauty, historical importance or financial value. In ancient times, dolls were used as representations of a deity, and played a central role in religious ceremonies and rituals. Lifelike or anatomically correct dolls are used by health professionals, medical schools and social workers to train doctors and nurses in various health procedures or investigate cases of sexual abuse of children. Artists sometimes use jointed wooden mannequins in drawing the human figure. Action figures representing superheroes and their predecessors, action dolls, are particularly popular among boys. Baby dolls, paper dolls, talking dolls, fashion dolls - the list is almost endless.

Broadway - The American Musical (PBS Series)ReviewsHere are the tracks that are only availalbe on the single disc sampler version of this set The Best of Broadway - The American Musical (PBS Series) 5 Oklahoma from Oklahoma 8 America from West Side Story 13 Cabaret from Cabaret Of course this five disc version has many many more tracks than the sampler but the above three are only on the sampler. Great set though! BROADWAY-THE AMERICAN MUSICAL was originally, I believe, a PBS Documentary that can now be purchased on DVD. I haven't seen any of the PBS Show. However, I am a huge fan of Broadway shows and music. I am a firm believer that the best music of America can be sewn across the tapestry of Broadway: here we have Sondheim and Streisand, Armstrong and Astaire, Merman and Martin, Berlin and Buckley. Listen to this music and you'll hear the music of America itself. Okay, enough of my philosophical observations on Broadway. I already know that you love Broadway music. If you don't, you would have stopped reading before the end of the first paragraph. The question you want answered is this: I want a set of great Broadway music that I'll love; some that I know, some that I don't. Is this the set that I should buy? The answer is: yes. This set is brilliant, and well-worth the money you'll spend for it. That amount of money is quite a bit. However, with five CDs, 109 songs, and a twenty-something page booklet that is interesting and well-written, you will feel very satisfied with your purchase. Quick, now, look back to the first paragraph and reread the names listed there. All of those were taken straight from this CD collection, and there are lots more besides those. I still haven't gotten to Jolson, Rivera, Andrews, Orbach, Grey, Lansbury, Mostel, or Channing (plus more). Initially, with this set, you will be overwhelmed with all of the great names and great music. It helps if you listen to it in order (Disc One before Disc 3, etc.), since all of the songs (excluding the first, GIVE MY REGARDS TO BROADWAY, which opens every Broadway set) are in chronological order. Listen to a song, and then read the annotation in the book. It will help you comprehend why this song, and the musical it belongs to, are important in Broadway history. Or, you could just listen for enjoyment. There are tons of beautiful songs here that I will cherish for the rest of my life: "Memory" from Cats, "Hello, Dolly!" from, well, Hello Dolly, "Open a New Window" from Mame, "Try to Remember" from The Fantasticks. Believe it or not, I had never heard any of these songs in their entirety before I purchased this set. Just think of what I was missing! Of course, there are some slight disputable errors. There is nothing here from RAGTIME or ASPECTS OF LOVE. And, a couple of songs are sort of unnessecary (I could have done without "I Enjoy Being a Girl" from FLOWER DRUM SONG, 1958.) However, there are many gems I would have overlooked if I had purchased a less comprehensive set: songs like "Luck Be a Lady" from GUYS AND DOLLS or "The Party's Over" from BELLS ARE RINGING. Overall, this is the set to have. It is a bit pricy, but the money is well worth the many hours of memories and pure enjoyment. Appreciate the magic of Broadway! Of course there should have been much more. I remember there been a Metropolian Opera series called CAST ALBUMS- 100 YEARS that was put out for a limited time only and had like five volumes. As Peter Filichia noted they left out SHE LOVES ME, BRIGADOON and SWEENEY TODD. Also nothing from PACIFIC OVERTURES, BIG RIVER, CHESS, CRAZY FOR YOU, JEKYLL & HYDE, TITANIC, THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL, FOOTLOOSE- THE MUSICAL, THE FULL MONTY, URINTOWN... But they couldn't have put it all. I would have done without Lee Remick's "Anyone Can Whistle", because the show was a flop. I guess because it was Sondheim's first "serious" show... The first three discs were only OK. I had forgotten how much better the later Broadway musical recordings were. The last two discs were very good, maybe because I could relate better to the shows or perhaps the productions were better. Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews. Average Rating:![]() |

The Best of Broadway - The American Musical (PBS Series)ReviewsHere are the tracks that are only availalbe on the single disc sampler version of this set The Best of Broadway - The American Musical (PBS Series) 5 Oklahoma from Oklahoma 8 America from West Side Story 13 Cabaret from Cabaret Of course this five disc version has many many more tracks than the sampler but the above three are only on the sampler. Great set though! The range of songs chosen for this compilation is awesome. Just what I was looking for. Note that some of the recordings are not in stereo. While I expected that for some of the very old songs recorded in the 1920's to 1940's, I thought that the songs from the 1950's and more recent would have been recorded in stereo. This is a pretty good compilation, but I have to wonder at some of the choices that went into it. "Good Morning Baltimore" is almost the least impressive song from Hairspray. "You Can't Stop the Beat" was a much more anthemic song from that show. I agree that it's too bad Les Mis didn't make it in. I would have traded that for anything Sondheim, although that's a personal preference :) . Still, the opportunity to hear the original performers and orchestras perform these works, all in one place, is a great deal. This one plays in the car, on the ipod and in the house. When the kids were little they would ask if we could take them to "The Street". That is what they called Broadway (little did they know at that time how famous that street is). They still love it and we can not get enough of it. This CD covers the best and makes you want to go and see a live performance. You can not beat that. Average Rating:![]() |

Born Free/Windmills of Your MindReviewsThis is a good if not essential component of the Percy Faith discography. The arrangements are lovely throughout, but the downside is that some of the tunes Faith has chosen are not particularly memorable. Does anyone really remember This Hotel? Nevertheless there are some fine moments. Windmills of Your Mind features a fine harpsichord solo, while And We Were Lovers is suitably languorous. The theme from Elvira Madigan, which is actually from the slow movement of Mozart's 21st Piano Concerto, is given a rather foursquare treatment, not nearly as witty as Faith's earlier orchestration of Bach in A Lover's Concerto. Georgy Girl is appropriately fizzy, while Born Free saunters along with enthusiasm and style. Despite the low points, this is a lovely disc to add to your Percy Faith collection If you are a collector of Percy Faith, you must run out to your local music store and pick this one up ~ "Plays The Academy Award Winner Born Free and Other Great Movie Themes" (originally released on Columbia Records CS 9450 in 1967) and "Windmills of Your Mind" (originally released on Columbia Records CS 9835 in 1969) ~ following the formula of previous Columbia Records releases featuring Faith's classic style of sweeping strings and haunting arrangements, they've come up with two more winners.Master of arranging, Faith's formula is so natural in keeping the arrangements fresh and new with his distinctive style ~ his tasteful treatment always highlights the quality of the composition ~ ultimately making them a hit all over again. Remember the days when you could turn on the radio and hear Percy Faith with many familiar pop standards ~ when you put this compact disc on your player, get ready for the "Percy Faith Touch" sprinkled with pure magic over the orchestration and leaves you simply in that unforgettable mood.Top performances inclusive for the twenty two tracks of film score themes ~ "A MAN AND A WOMAN" (Barouh/Lai), "A TIME FOR LOVE" (Webster/Mandel), "ALFIE"(David/Bacharach), "AS LONG AS HE NEEDS ME" (Lionel Bart), "BORN FREE"(John Barry), "CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG" (Richard M. Sherman/Robert B. Sherman), "ELVIRA'S THEME" (Percy Faith), "FOR LOVE OF IVY" (Russell/Quincy Jones), "THEME FROM "THE FOX" (Lalo Schlfrin), "FUNNY GIRL" (Merrill/Styne), "GEORGY GIRL"(Dale/Springfield), "THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER" (Peggy Lee/David Grusin), "HOW ARE THINGS IN GLOCCA MORRA?"(Harburg/Lane), "THE LION IN THE WINTER"(John Barry), "SONG FROM "THE OSCAR" (Evans/Livingston/Percy Faith), "THEME FROM "THE SAND PEPPLES" (Bricusse/Goldsmith), "SOMEWHERE MY LOVE(Lara's Theme from "Dr. Zhivago")"(Webster/Jarre), "STAR" (Cahn/Van Heusen), "THIS IS MY SONG" (Charles Chaplin), "THIS HOTEL" (Keating/Quine), "THE WINDMILLS OF YOUR MIND" and "THE WISHING DOLL" (David/Bernstein) ~ notice two of the selections were composed by the man himself Percy Faith! Impressive line up of top movie songs that will surely satisfy the appetite of all "film-score-buffs" and Percy Faith fans...gotta love it!Total Time: 63:41 on 22 Tracks ~ Collectables 7428 ~ (2/19/2002) Another perfect reissiue by collectibles music,This album contains themes from movies. Most of these songs have been unavailable by Faith since Lps went out. This album contains such songs as somewhere my love, this hotel,And we were lovers,This is my song,Alfie,How are things in Glacca Morra and many more. All of these songs are beautifully done Faith style. The album empasizes just his orchestra.Their's no chrous here. The original liner notes to born free are included in the bookelet as well as pictures of Faith probebly from born free under the clear cd holder. The liner notes to Windmills of your mind are not included. If your a collector of Percy Faith's music you have to get this cd since many of these songs are on cd for the first time. Kit Mini Doll (American Girl)Reviewsa nice price point for a very popular item very small book inside is a nice feature--put your bifocals on :) We own several of the full-size American Girl dolls (one per daughter). I was hoping this little one wouldn't look "cheap" beside them, and it doesn't! My daughter is delighted with it and it makes a nice way to add to the collection without the expense of the full-size dolls. My daughter loves the American Girl dolls. This was a nice stocking stuffer. The prices on Amazon are great for these. My 4 year old LOVES the Kit Kittridge movie, so this was the perfect gift for her. Some of her 4 year old friends already have REAL American Girl dolls, but I don't feel it necessary to spend that much money on a doll for a preschooler. This little mini version was the perfect solution! She's so proud to own an American girl of her favorite character, and its good practice to teach her to take propor care of a special doll until she's ready for the real thing. The details are amazing, its an exact replica. The mini book that comes with it is cute too, but the text is SO tiny that its hard to read the story to her, so we put the book aside for now. Like all of the other small AG dolls, this one is made with the same attention to detail as the big dolls but with really, really wide hips. My problem with this doll in particular was with the hair. Her hair is SUPER soft and could be great, but she had a hack job haircut when she arrived and it is too short for me to even it out easily. Average Rating:![]() |

Doll School: For Girls Who Love to Teach! (American Girl)ReviewsMy 9 year old daughter loves playing school, loves American Girl, loves making things, and loves little "stuff". This was the perfect gift for her and she enjoyed it for hours. My grandaughter is home schooled and loves her American girl dolls, so this was the prefect gift for her and she did love it. I wish they would have included little file boxes to put together to store all the little pieces of papers in. Other reviewers suggest a shoe box, but I needed a tiny box to hold the tiny file folders upright so their contents won't fall out. I have spent a lot of time today just organizing the pieces of this product and looking for tiny boxes, etc. to store stuff in. My 7 year old daughter loves it all, but still needs my help with it. She has 4 doll "students" and has set up report cards for all of them, graded some tests (actually added up scores for correct answers), filled in the "Teacher's Attendance and Grade Book" with their attendance and their test scores, and then said that teachers' jobs are not as easy as she had thought. Good insight. I helped her average the 2 math test scores she had for each student so she could fill in the first grading period on their report cards, so was glad to introduce her to "averaging" and division. The alphabet banner is in cursive, so she is excited about starting to learn that, as she is only in first grade. She enjoys the multiplication flash cards, so I'm thinking of getting a whole deck that she can work with. Suggestion--All the little pieces to this school set come on sheets of heavy weight paper and you punch out the pieces, like the flash cards, tiny library cards, tests, file folers, award certificates, etc. I highly recommend that BEFORE you punch out any of the pieces, you SCAN THE PAGES INTO YOUR COMPUTER SO YOU CAN PRINT OUT DUPLICATES AS NEEDED. The set is supposed to have enough school supplies for 4 dolls. In the book it often says if you have more than 4 "students" you will need to make photocopies of the items to have enough for each student. Well, I don't know about the other reviewers, but my book only had one writing journal, even though the book specifically states, "If you have more than 4 students, photocopy the cover and pages." Another disparity between the book and the items in the kit is the school "locker" door. The book says it's a "sticker" but mine is just a piece of paper printed to look like a locker door. The idea is to stick the "locker door" picture onto a shoebox lid, tape the lid to the box on one side and make a locker out of the shoe box. I only had one "locker door" in my book, so I'd have to make photocopies of if I wanted lockers for all 4 of my daughter's students. I'd like to see some online component to this book, where buying the book gives you a code to go online and find more things to do like this. Overall, great idea. Brings me back to my own childhood playing school and making little items for my dolls. I too have had to set up a "doll school" in a corner. Once school starts back, I plan to make up little spelling tests for the dolls with my daughter's weekly spelling words from school. Same with math and other subjects. Would love to hear more suggestions from other purchasers. Santa brought this to my daughter for X-mas and it was her favorite present! She is in second grade and loves to play school. Now she can play with her doll. The math is a bit hard for her but now she wants to learn multiplication. It is very well done. Lots of little pieces so you need a box or bag to keep everything together. Highly recommend. What can I say? My 9-year-old played with this for 12 hours and I'm sure I haven't seen the last of it. Rebecca Mini Doll (American Girl)ReviewsThe mini dolls are much more affordable than the 18" version dolls. They are of a higher quality than Barbie dolls and can be played with much like a Barbie. The doll clothes are removable. My daughter loves playing with these mini versions and has begun to collect them. She has 4 regular sized American girl dolls as well but plays with the mini ones more. She is 6 years old. I just love buying these dolls on Amazon. They are such a great buy! I have been collecting them and buying them as gifts for all the little girls in my family and my mom. They are well made and great smaller versions of the bigger American Girl dolls! I love that they include a book w/them! In general, manufacturers are focused on selling their merchandise, including dolls, or beer, or cigarettes, or whatever else. So one needs to be wary of what the products might do to society as a whole. My daughter explains to me that the American Girl (AG) dolls have interesting social histories and lessons as background. My problems with such products are manifold. First, if these dolls have social lessons for young girls to learn, then they should be egalitarian and affordable for poor little girls as much as rich little girls. This, these dolls are not. Second, certain "collectible" items become inherently prone to addictive behavior, which is of course a very welcome development for the manufacturer. Recall how cigarettes have been spiked in terms of nicotine and other forms of addictive potency, in order to get a consumer "hooked." I do notice the very same tendencies with these dolls. Third (and last for this discussion), I believe young girls (and boys) must be encouraged to open their hearts and minds to the world, its beauty and its many inequities, and attempt to find happiness with simplicity, contentment, creativity, and the spirit of sharing. To me, having an expensive doll collection (or even less, an expensive car collection, or other things of that nature) does not fit that definition. The Rebecca mini AG doll, however, is relatively inexpensive, and in that sense, a more equitable offering to young girls who have not yet moved on to tackling the great issues of life. The minute my nieces saw the little dolls, they just hugged them and started to play. My daughter has begun to collect the mini American Girl dolls. She has enjoyed them very much. You not only recieve a miniture version of the original doll, but you also recieve with it a hard cover copy of the first book in that doll's series. We purchased two in this transaction - one for my daughter and one for her friend. Her friend's mother called and said that her daughter was so excited. Previously she had purchased the original size doll, for each book series, when her daughter completed reading the series of books for that doll. With the present economy and their families financial situation though, they are no longer able to do this. Her daugher was so excited when she recieved Rebecca and told her mother that now she can collect the mini dolls and still continue her American Girl doll collection! Amazon offers a great deal on the dolls. In my opinion it's the way to go! Average Rating:![]() |

Felicity - An American Girl Adventure (Gift Pack with Bracelet)ReviewsNice way to get a young girl interested in reading and watching the story of another little girl from another time in history. The doll provides the tactile introduction to the movie. The book makes it great to learn more. American Girl has the right idea for little girls to see their dolls as more than something to throw away when you're done playing. We love these movies as they are so well done, and enjoyable over and over again My 8 yr old niece loved it, and it got there at just the right time!! The action of the film takes place in 1775 before US Declaration of Independence in Williamsburg, so it relies heavily on the history. Felicity, a girl who loves horses more than preparing tea, is a main character. But this is not only about her. The movie shows the struggle of women for more rights just like Samantha film, although in different times. It also shows how in spite of division of the society into Patriots (for US independence) and Loyalists - they all can celebrate Christmas together. This reminds me of Democrats vs Republican constant bickering... It also shows that every good deed will be repaid by another good deed. Sometimes it is almost naive in this aspect since we cannot expect people change so rapidly like in this movie. Still it is optimistic that the main idea is that nobody is totally bad and we can improve people by acting nicely towards them. My daughter, 9 years old, learned something since the next day after coming from school she announced proudly that she used some information from the movie in her school work. Our entire family enjoyed this dvd. It is a wholesome movie that includes the importance of family and the importance of sticking up for those unable to do so for themselves. It brings to light many great discussions, such as the wrongdoing of the man in the movie who abused his horse and how being honest and honoring a contract is a sign of integrity. There is nothing objectionable in this film and I applaud the directors for creating a movie void of violence, sexuality, and bad language. I would highly recommend this movie! Average Rating:![]() |

Doll Clothes Hangers ~ Set of 4 fits 18 inch American Girl doll clothesReviewsOur granddaughter loves the coat hangers and keeps the doll clothes well organized in the doll closet...but they are much too expensive. These are just perfect for my daughter's American Girl clothes that I didn't buy directly from American Girl. She has an armoire for them, but didn't have any hangers and these work just great. I do think they're a bit pricey, though. Instead of 4 for $8, maybe 6 or 8 for $8 would be more reasonable. Overall, very pleased with the product, though. I got these hangers to put in a baby doll wardrobe. The hook on them is so small I had to "jam" them on the rod. Good news is that the clothes fit on each hanger fine and with my daughter not able to remove them from the wardrobe herself there will be no chance of hangers left on the floor. Still I had a image of us taking an outfit out of the wardrobe to try on the her baby or bear. I guess we'll just pretend that we are in a hotel with the hangers that cannot be removed from the rod. This is perfect for the American Girl Dolls. Very good quality. Was impressed. Thanks a lot. Very nice Hangers that fit in the American Girl Armoire.Great quality for the price.
