Lincoln Logs are a toy consisting of notched miniature logs, about ¾ inches (1-2cm) in diameter. Analogous to real logs used in a log cabin, Lincoln Logs have notches in their ends so that small model log buildings can be built. In addition, a Lincoln Logs set has windows and doors to make the buildings more realistic. More modern sets also come with figures of humans and animals that match the scale of the buildings.

Lincoln Logs were invented some time between 1916 and 1917 (the official Lincoln Logs website indicates 1916) by John Lloyd Wright, a son of the notable architect Frank Lloyd Wright. In 1918, they were marketed by the Red Square Toy Company and by John Lloyd Wright, Incorporated of Chicago, Illinois. Lincoln Logs originally came with instructions on how to build Uncle Tom's Cabin as well as Lincoln's log cabin.

The architecture of the Imperial Hotel basement in Tokyo, designed by John's father, which used a unique foundation of interlocking beams to make the structure "earthquake proof", assisted in the designing of the toy logs.

The toy can easily produce a structure resembling a log cabin, hence the association with American president Abraham Lincoln (who spent his childhood in a log cabin). The toy's name may have been influenced by his father's birth name, which was Frank Lincoln Wright.

The sets were originally made of 100% wood, with varying colors of roof pieces, but by the 1970's almost all the wood had been replaced by plastic. As of this writing the company has brought back the wood pieces in their Nostalgia line of products.

You have heard the slogan "Tippecanoe and Tyler Too" and this CD collection of American political music from the 19th-century allows you to hear the song from the 1840 election. Other songs evidence strong feelings both for and against Andrew Jackson, "The Hunters of Kentucky" versus "King Andrew," as well as "John Tyler's Lamentation," "Filmore the Wise," "We Are Coming Father Abraham," and "Hurrah for Hayes and Honest Ways." Even more interesting are the songs about slavery and abolition ("The Grave of the Slave," "Get Off the Track," and "The Fugitive's Song"). Teachers of American history will certainly find tracks to use to supplement their textbooks. There are also instrumental tracks marches, grand marches, quick steps, gallops, a gallopade, a waltz and even a polka for various Presidential candidates. There are also dirges for William Henry Harrison and Abraham Lincoln. "The Platform Committee" singing these works consists of mezzo-soprano Linda Russell, tenors Patrick Romano, Frederick Urrey and Rudolph Palmer, and bass-baritone John Ostendorf. The Chestnut Brass Company plays period instruments, most of which were made during the mid-19th-century, although there are some reproductions. You will hear Keyed Bugles and Cornopeans that date before the Civil War. While most of the instrumental pieces heard in this collection were intended for bands, original orchestrations survive for only three of the pieces ("General Taylor Storming Monterey," "Hail to the Chief" and "The American National Waltz"). The rest of the instrumental works had to be rearranged in the style of the period from piano sheet music. Whether you are an aficionado of 19th-century band music or political history, you will find this a collection well worth hearing. Certainly teachers of American History will be able to use some of the songs to great advantage in the classroom. Note: This album was originally released in 1992 by Newport Classic as "Tippecanoe and Tyler Too: A Collection of American Political Marches, Songs, and Dirges."

My kids really like this set. We had a smaller set before but they didn't play with it much because there weren't enough logs to build much of anything. Now they can build all kinds of houses and garages for their other toys. Very much like the ones I had when I was a kid. My old one has flat roof slats and plastic eaves but these are all wood pieces. 200 pieces not as much as it sounds like though, we could probably use another set.

The Classic Tinkertoy Construction Set The Classic Tinkertoy Construction Set

I bought these to supplement a smaller set that did not have enough parts for elaborate constructions. This set certainly does. There are enough pieces that my two kids don't even fight over them and they almost never have to take apart what they have just built to have enough pieces to make something else. The pieces that are supposed to glow in the dark don't glow well but since they are never played with in the dark it is not a problem...

Although there are a few plastic hinged pieces now, this is still pretty much the same classic toy. The kids seem to have as much fun making specific things as they do just putting pieces together and making nothing in particular. Probably the toy played with most since Christmas.

We thought that we were getting glow-in-the-dark Tinkertoys. These aren't. Only the flags glow in the dark. We were very disappointed.

The product is great! I enjoyed these very much as a kid, and now my grandson is as well. My only negative response would be that I feel the product is terribly over priced. People who are not familiar with "tinker toys" (I have found there are a lot), won't pay that amount. I would hate to see these no longer available for kids to learn great building, and construction skills.

I bought this set for my grandchildren and they love it. But I was hoping to get a set that was like the one I had when I way a boy. Although this set has some different parts it lacks at least one of the parts of the old sets. The biggest problem with this set so far is that size of the holes in the round wheels and connectors seem to be of inconsistent size and the sticks will not stay in some of them. Also, there is no instruction book or plans for things to build in this set so the kids have no guidance on what to build. Overall this set is pretty good and someone who never played with the old sets will be satisfied.

Spend your money on something else. This is a 100pcs set with 56 of them 1" long with one notch. I think we would have to buy 6 of the sets and toss out most of the pcs to make something useful or even close to what we remember Lincoln logs to be.

I ordered these for my nephew. He loves to build things and these were perfect. My order arrived on time and in good condition. Would recommend this seller to anyone.

Overall, this is a pretty good set of Lincoln Logs, but as usual with sets of building toys, there aren't nearly enough in one set to really do much with. I am disappointed in the sizes of the pieces. There are tons of small ones and not enough medium or long ones. You can only build one roof with one chimney at a time. I did not notice any toxic smell, however, so I was happy about that. Our kids will have fun with these, but we'll probably have to buy more to make them worth it.

My neice loved this toy. I was so happy she enjoyed such a classic. However, I was dissappointed to read on the tin that the product was made in China. Why is an American classic toy based on the American President Abraham Lincoln made in China? Let us make it here in America and I would give it 5 stars all around.

I haven't even opened the bags holding the wooden logs yet, so won't comment on them. There are definitely fewer of them than the set I had as a child. The other reviewer who commented on the toxic smell was right - it's potent. Luckily I was buying for myself, not a child. I once bought a mahjong box imported from China with the same smell...2 years later, it hasn't gone away. The tin is thin and cheap. My childhood set (from the '70s) came in a cardboard tube with a plastic top, and it was infinitely more sturdy than this "collectible" tin. In addition, the top was held on with clear tape that left a thick sticky residue when I removed it. I once bought a popcorn tin at a dollar store that suffered from the same problem.... I didn't expect it with this tin, for $30+. Sad. And I have to add $3 to the price I paid for the tin just for the naphtha I used trying to remove the residue! I also had to be extremely careful, so as not to bend the cheapo tin or its lid. On the plus side, the logs seem to be better stained than the set I had as a kid - darker and more uniform, especially the green ones. Of course, as I said, I haven't actually opened the bags yet.

This was an addition to our current lincoln log set and integrated wonderfully although the color is different the peices all work together great. The kids now have more peices! I wished it would have had more longer peices and roof peices, but all in all was great add on kit for great price!

Just addressing the "most helpful" critical review. These are made of Wood NOT plastic as stated. Perhaps it was the 'competition' writing the negative review. It happens. I hate that when that happens, always have to second guess some people's motives for reviews...

Gave to a 2 yr old boy for his birthday. He builds and builds for hours!

I think this was overpriced. I also thought I was purchasing the original Linclon Logs. These were plastic. Wouldn't buy again.

These logs bring back memories of my childhood. We played with them for hours and built all sorts of things. Now my grandchildren are having great fun creating some interesting looking structures. They will last a long time being so sturdy. I will probably buy more to give them even or options.

LINCOLN LOGS Building Manual: Graphic Instructions for 37 World-Famous Designs LINCOLN LOGS Building Manual: Graphic Instructions for 37 World-Famous Designs

We have all seen the crazy complicated Lego buildings and blue prints for "copying" (good luck!) the designs, I was expecting simular ideas in this book for lincoln logs. I was glad to see ideas that are plain, every day, common man type, but I was disapointed that there wasn't atleast one crazy complicated one (you know just to look at and laugh yah right at).

I had been searching the internet for a set of pictures or instructions for my 6 year old to use with all his lincoln logs. This book is by far the best resource we found. Well worth the money... My son cannot read yet and was able to build even the most complex buildings in this book by following the instructive pictures.

My husband and grandson needed extra ideas on what they could build with our lincoln logs. This book has helped their own imagination. A great book for ALL aged builders.

This book is a wonderful guide. My 6 year old loves to flip through the pages to see what he will construct next.

My 7-year-old grandson uses this book to create various Lincoln Logs structures. The instructions just visual so you don't need to be able to read to use the book, and it comes with a CD-ROM so you can print out instructions if you want or need to. Some of the structures are kind of basic, like the tower (well, duh, you just stack the logs) but overall, the book is worth having just to keep the Logs interesting. If you have a kid who is kind of technical and enjoys figuring things out and putting puzzles together and the like, this is a great book for them. Also good for parents who aren't that good at building things with Lincoln Logs!
