G.I. Joe is a line of military-themed articulated "action figures" produced by the toy company Hasbro. The initial product offering represented four of the branches of the U.S. Armed Forces with the Action Soldier (Army), Action Sailor (Navy), Action Pilot (Air Force) and Action Marine (USMC). The term "G.I. Joe" stood for "Government Issue Joe", signifying the universal makeup of the US forces at the time. The development of G.I. Joe led to the coining of the term "action figure."

In 1963, noting the commercial success of the Barbie doll for girls, Stan Weston, a toy creator and licensing agent, came up with the idea of a Barbie-like line with a military theme that would be marketed to boys. He presented his idea to Don Levine, the creative director of Hasbro, who saw the potential of the idea and approved. The prototypes were originally named "Rocky" (the marine/soldier) "Skip" (the sailor) and "Ace" (the pilot), before Don Levine, inspired by the 1945 film The Story of G.I. Joe, decided on the generic name G.I. Joe.

The line was launched, on February 2, 1964, with a World War II theme (although some of the clothes and other items, such as the Willy's Jeep, were actually of Korean-war vintage). The G.I. Joe figures were approximately the same physical scale as Barbie dolls - 12 inches, or 305 mm, tall. There were originally four figures, one to represent each branch of the Armed Forces. Accessory packs (often called "blades" in the toy industry - the "razor" was the action figure and the "blades" were the accessory cards) containing additional gear and clothing were also released.

As some of you know, I am a Ferrante and Teicher fan from way back. When I read their dedication on this disc, I was really impressed. I dont know which one is officially retired, but the fact that he came out of retirement to help put this disc together was great... and the disc is A-1! During the Bicentennial year(1976) I had a vinyl disc, Spirit of 176, which much of the music from this disc is from. Some of the musical effects are quite interesting, and my mother really loves the disc. I am so pleased that they released it. A real keeper!

This movie was my favorite as a kid and it still holds up to this day.

I had this on VHS for quite a while when I was young. It is definitely a far cry from the 'Joe syndicated series, replacing great favorite characters like Snake Eyes and Zartan to spotlight a new cast of heroes (specifically, Lt. Falcon among others) and a new cast of enemies (Cobra-LA). Personally, I wouldn't have minded seeing more of Duke, Snake Eyes, Roadblock, Gung-Ho, Cobra Commander, the Dreadnoks, etc. but this was not designed as an extended episode of the series (like the "M.A.S.S. Device" and "Revenge of Cobra/Weather Dominator" episodes were). Still, I enjoyed the dynamic between Lt. Falcon and many of the heroes (his half-brother, Duke, Jinx, Sgt. Slaughter, etc.) Incidentally (and I touched on this briefly above), as a fair warning to fans of the syndicated series: this is not an extended episode of the series as past movies have been. It takes on a darker more dramatic tone (Duke almost dies of a serpent bite and Roadblock goes blind while helping Cobra Commander escape, etc.) and it does appear to deviate into the realm of science fiction a lot (the birth of Cobra-LA, the use of mutant plant spores, the Broadcast Energy Transmitter, etc.) Again, the movie is a great send-off to Sunbow's treatment of our favorite "Real American Heroes" and, while Snake Eyes was much too underused for me, he has been used several times before and can be left to his druthers this time. What I did really appreciate was to see Cobra Commander's history revealed as well as the (literal) face behind the mask. All of this; and 25 of those vintage PSAs as just one of several special features? I had to order it! So now you know; "and knowing is half the battle. GI JOOOOOE!"

Superb GI Joe movie that represents the pinnacle of Joe storytelling (outside the original comics) that is the perfect blend of Sci Fi and earth based military. Joe, Cobra, and beyond are represented and a good amount of screen time to bunches of characters makes for a perfect movie. Writing like in this movie, and Transformers The Movie (the original one with Unicron and Galvatron, you know the good one) SIMPLY JUST DOES NOT HAPPEN IN THIS DAY AND AGE ANYMORE!!! The writing proved that you could do a huge epic story with SCOPE (something writers cannot do anymore) and still make a movie that made sense and most of all.... ENTERTAINED!!! Simply one of the best movies of all time, with great voice talent (Burgess Meredith, anyone?) and an epic tale.... make this movie a must see..... too bad it's NOT AVAILABLE ANY LONGER ON DVD!!! I got my copy when it was first released on DVD.... too bad the morons in charge can't see that THIS is the real Joe movie, and not that 2009 Rise of Cobra bullcrap..... 5 stars, Simply perfect.... my highest recommendation....

This movie changed GI Joe after it was shown. I think the cartoon series would have lasted much longer if the movie had not come out.

This was a great find. The quality is outstanding. It was great to share this with my 2 boys.

Our favorite American hero has returned in this rerelease of the now cult-classic G.I. Joe movie from 1987. Once again G.I. Joe must protect the world from total obliteration. Cobra, the deadliest of foes and leader of an underground race of snake people, is proving to be a great threat to humankind...

Ok, is not rocket science, not something for the Oscars, but is not that bad either. Visually the movies is fine, good sfx, good designs and over all atmosphere, the costumes looked good except for Cobra Commander's mask that truly looks stupid and the joe's armor suits that looks to bulky and complicated, something more in the Iron Man line would have been better. The acting is , well, good enough for the material. The only bad part was the whole Paris chase secuence, is far too long and the good guys end up doing more damage than the bad ones. That said is pretty much what i expected but better. As far as comic, toy and superhero movies go this one is a winner, and compared to Transformers:Revenge of the Fallen, this one is a work of art.

I usually don't like war type movies. But this show was more than a war movie. It had a great story line and cast. My son played with GIJoes. So I kinda knew the chars. I hope they make another one. 2 thumbs up GIJOE XD

(NO SPOILERS HERE) First off, I grew up watching G.I. Joe every afternoon when I got home from school, and was thrilled to hear Paramount had finally decided to make a live action film. I headed to the theater basically expecting tons of action and ZERO story, but to my surprise...it had actually had both! Explosions, ninja fights, crazy weapons, and a slew of one liners pulled directly from the cartoon will have you smiling ear to ear. Add in some cool flashbacks, an interesting plot twist, and a sultry Sienna Miller....what more can you ask for?!?! Oh, and the Blu-Ray looks amazing as usual.

I really loved this movie when I saw it at the theater. I am surprised the rating is as low as it is.

I admit it. I likes me some comic book movies and some video game movies (Iron Man and Resident Evil come to mind). I even likes me some kids toy movies (see Transformers). They're good fun, escapist entertainment. This movie was nothing more than a rip off of every recently released special effects blockbuster with much lower quality effects. Remember how cheesy Daredevil was. It's like that, only with the most painfully stupid scene I have ever witnessed in a movie. Towards the end of the film, the villians blew up the ice on the surface of the ocean, whereupon the ice came crashing down to the bottom of the sea. I'm all for willing suspension of disbelief, but if you are going to have magic ice that sinks like a rock, you gotta give me a reason to buy it. Hasn't everyone on the planet seen the ice in their glass floating on the top. Gotta go. I'm feeling nauseous from the memory.

The Rise of Cobra is not your grandfather's G.I. Joe. It's more like C.G.I. Joe with explosive special-effects action sequences that provide the film with a surplus of "Boom Boom Pow" (to quote the Black Eyed Peas song that drives the end credits)...

This item came WAY before the expected arrival date and was in the condition the seller stated it would be. I was very satisfied with it :)

This title is a farce it was repeated 4 times so therefore I have sent this back and because of the seller's misleading information I have lost $17.49 which is more than half of what I paid. I'm really mad so I don't care for this product or this seller. It was a bad experience all the way around.

I love the GI Joe series- this is well worth the money. It is the animated series and it is fun and exciting and the Cobra organization is a good villian and you know the GI Joes are excellent as the heros and heroines--- I recommend it for fun light entertainment esp. for the young or young at heart

It's so great to have the original GI Joe collection on DVD. Now we can share what we grew up with with our children. This set is so much fun and brings me back to childhood. Great buy!

After watching the live action movie of G.I. Joe Rise Of The Cobra(While a little entertaining but still a somewhat of a letdown) I felt the feelings of wanting to watch the cartoon version to bring back the true enjoyment of this series. The animated series and the live action version of course differ greatly so if you're a fan of the cartoon series than you must pass the live action movie over or be prepared to be annoyed. The cartoon version while lasting I think about 95 episodes was and will always be one of the most remembered shows of the 80's to live on. Watching as the JOES and Cobra would battle each other every episode or through multi-part story saga episodes was great and entertaining to watch and I was greatly saddened when the producers decided to cancel the show. The cast for the JOES and COBRA were so numerous that it was easy for anyone to have their own personal favorite character for the show from Duke, Scarlet, Snake Eyes, Flint, and Lady Jaye to Cobra Commander and Destro and the Baroness. The video quality of the box sets for this show was amazing considering the age of the show itself and while not picture perfect it still reaches close to that point and the audio is pretty decent as well no buzzing or annoyance to speak about. Though for the price of these sets I say get the first season two box sets very affordable and with some pretty decent extras which I haven't seen all of them is still pretty good. While some might not care for the animation especially those who've become to use to the cgi effects used with today's animated cartoons an the likes might not care for these earlier classics, but for those who grew up watching these cartoons or have seen them through reruns on cable here's a great catch for your home library today. One thing though I would say is while they tried to make a new revival during the 90's that show I felt was sadly lacking the spark that the 80's version had and while they weren't bad the 90's version just didn't connect with me as the earlier series did so for fans of the 80's version just stick with these box sets and just pass over the 90's version....

GI Joe Movie Snake Eyes Sword and Mask GI Joe Movie Snake Eyes Sword and Mask

Reviews

This was a gift for my great nephew, who is 8 years old, for Christmas. He immediately put the mask on and started playing with the sword! Flashing lights, great sound effects, he was having the time of his life! I'm glad I got this for him. Thanks!

I bought this for my 4 year old son for Christmas - Not only is it cheaper on here than stores, the delivery was standard and was EXTREMELY FAST, MY SON LOVES IT!!! All my kids and their friends play w/ it and they LOVE IT!!!!

Looks can be deceiving. This looks like a cheap sword and mask halloween set. However, it is actually pretty good. The mask looks realistic and fits fairly well. I really enjoyed the sword though. There have been similar sword toys that do similar things, but this one executes well. When the sword is swung from side to side, it makes cool "sword-like" sounds. The sounds are of a sword fight, and they are activated with each swing. The sounds vary, so it does sound realistic. My son is having a BLAST with this toy, and enjoys showing us his swordsman "prowess". There is a special button that sounds like the user is being "charged up". Then when released, along with alot of fast swinging, it sounds like you are executing some sort of Killer Sword combo that often leaves the user in a ninja like pose when it ends. It was a little pricey, but for the fun it brings my son, it was well worth it.

This is a Christmas present, so my 4 year old son has not opened yet. But everytime we go into the store, he looks for it and makes me promise that if Santa doesn't get it for him, that I must. This is one item in his list that has not changed. I am looking forward to Chritmas morning to see him happy. It look durable, it has light and sound. Small accesories are not sutible for small children (as mine). But I will let him play with the sword and mask and hide the rest until he is older or for when he is playing under supervision.

I gave this toy to my five year old grandson and he played with it for hours. The sounds the sword makes are realistic and fun. His one year old sister was also attracted to it and loved to put on the accompanying hood. Seems to be well made.
