A rocking horse is a child's toy, usually shaped like a horse and mounted on rockers similar to a rocking chair.

Predecessors of the rocking horse may be seen in the rocking cradle, the tilting seats used during the middle ages for jousting practice as well as the wheeled hobby horse. The toy in its current form did not appear before the 17th century, though some conflicting sources note medieval manuscripts including references to carved rocking horses, presumably of the toy kind.

From the 1800s onward rocking horses became more commonly considered as child's toy. Mostly built by hobby woodcrafters, and ranging from relatively crude to finely ornamented and the toys of future kings, it was not until the late 19th century that the production became industrialized.

In 2006, the Guinness Book of World Records certified Cindy and Les Hartness of California as having the largest hand-carved wooden rocking horse on record. This rocking horse was built in 2000 and is 7 feet 8 inches tall and weighs 1,200 pounds. It can be seen at renaissance fairies, where up to 4 adults can ride it together at one time.

A common play on words is the phrase "as rare as rocking horse shit", meaning something that is very rare, because of course, rocking horses cannot defecate.

This is a very cute, sturdy rocking horse. Easy to put together and only took 10 or 15 min. I love the construction and the color. It was accurate to the picture online. It is my 6 month old granddaughter's first horse. It is big for her yet but I knew that before I purchased it. I chose this one because of the other reviews I read that the children loved this even after they were too big to use it.

We ordered this rocking horse as our grandson's Christmas gift. When we opened the box to assemble it, one of the critical pieces was broken in two! I wish I could evaluate the assembled rocking horse, because although the product was not as substantial as it appeared in its photo, I would have replaced it for his occasional use at our house. Alas, it was out of stock and could not be reordered. On the plus side, returning it to Amazon could not have been easier!

This is an awesome rocking horse that we hope to have for many years to come! Our girls love it and it was very easy to put together. The Cognac color is also a very nice stain! Great price and we felt like we got a great deal!

This is a quality product. The wood is beautiful and the features of the horse are very well done. The price was right and shipping was free. I am delighted with the product as is my grandchild.

We bought this rocking horse last year as a Christmas gift for our (at that time) one year old grandson. It went together quite easily and looks very nice. He uses it all the time and is very happy with it. Considering the price, this is great toy. I can think of a lot of other, more expensive toys that might get laid aside after a small amount of use. This rocking horse has the potential to be passed down to future generations.

This is a precious rocking horse. Extremely pretty pastel colors and paint with soft, girly-girl mane and tail . It goes great in my granddaughter's pink room. She loves it and was so excited when she got it for Christmas. My son put it together fairly easily, but he had to use some of his own tools to tighten it up. The only bad point to this rocking horse is that there is no place for a small child to put their feet to brace themselves. Someone has to hold on to her to ensure she doesn't fall off. She loves it and her mom and dad were happy too.

Lullabies: A Songbook Companion Lullabies: A Songbook Companion

Reviews

This is our family's favorite music CD for a baby. Julianne Baird sings these traditional lullabies so sensitively and beautifully. She sings with the depth of interpretation of a classical singer but also with a warm simplicity and little vibrato. The book is a treasure (I agree with others that it would be helpful to have the lullabies in the same order as the CD, but there is a table of contents and an index), and if you can play the piano a little, the arrangements are simple and lovely. Listening to the whole CD is like listening to a wonderful concert. Babies and children do not need music to be all high and dinky and the same; this is real music, performed to perfection with motherly warmth. Don't miss it!

This could serve a purpose for those who don't read music to learn the tunes. The singer sounds OK on some songs, but her renditions of "All the Pretty Little Horses" and "Rock-a-bye Baby" were horribly sung. The book has beautiful images and is a real keepsake. If you are looking for a fabulous voice with great emotional feeling in it, get someone's grandma to sing from the book.

I love this CD. It's very well-done, and the approach is different than most children's CDs - very refined, yet soothing. I don't get tired of listening to it the way I do others -- which is important when trying to get a little one to sleep! I highly recommend it and the companion book.

With just piano, violin and vocals, this is a simple and heartfelt album. Ms. Baird's voice conveys the full emotions that a mother feels for her new baby with clean and open singing. The first track in particular, "All Through The Night," still makes me teary. I played this in the hospital when my son was born, and we use it as part of our wind-down ritual. I do agree that some of the songs are a little upbeat for bedtime. We just skip those in the evening (using iTunes).

Our whole family loves this cd. I am continually charmed and refreshed by the subtlety, taste and musicianship that has gone into these arrangements of well- and lesser-known gems. Apart from the joy of the simple yet perfect chordal progressions, listen to the warm, caressing tone imparted by the low bass notes in the piano in many of the tracks. The pace is so wonderfully leisurely, there is time to savour each song or piece, and yet each lasts only two or three minutes. The three diverse yet complementary singers, each with a tender and gentle presence suiting the subject matter, give a sense of a 19th century family musical evening. Magical.

Released as a companion piece to the award-winning book Lullabies: An Illustrated Songbook, this hour-plus of music is a wonderful mix of stately classical themes and child-friendly vocals. The selections range from "All the Pretty Little Horses" to a global spread of lullabies drawn from classical and folk traditions...

(Not) Your Standard Spike Jones Collection (Not) Your Standard Spike Jones Collection

Reviews

Very enjoyable collection of Spike Jones' most beloved songs. If you like funny and sometime schmaltzy songs, you'll really like this 3 disk collection

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet-79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Notes and great pictures accompany this 3-CD walk on the wacky side from the greatest novelty band of all time.

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

Good Music for Little Guys Good Music for Little Guys

My two sons, ages 4 and 1, love the CD. They love to dance, march, and jump to these upbeat classical favorites. It is a great way to have kids burn energy while working the body and mind. Occasionally I point out the different instruments, loudness, speed of the music, name of the piece, composer etc. It is nice to have all of these favorites compiled on one CD. The CD is 67 minutes long so I start the CD at a different spot each time. The title is misleading, I think it should read "Good Music for Little Guys and Girls"!

My 18-month-old enjoys this album a lot. If he's feeling grumpy, starting it up will usually bring at least a temporary smile at the first strains of "The Stars and Stripes Forever". If he's in a good mood to begin with, he really gets into it, moving with the music. It's a lot more tolerable on repeat than some of his other favorite albums, as well, which makes my day more pleasant.

I bought this album for my grandson when he was just 11 months and he immediately danced to the music. Now he is 16 months old and as soon as he hears the first piece, he runs to get his rhythm instruments so he can keep time to the music. Most of the baby classical albums don't have lively music so this is a real treat. I highly recommend this for anyone who wants to encourage a love of classical music and a sense of rhythm.

bought it for my 15 month old, she loves to rock on it. toy seems pretty stable and sturdy. would recommend it without hesitation.

my grandsons face lit up when he saw the blue horse. he hopped right on and began rocking. he is 19 months old. my grand daughter has one also and she still loves hers even at 3 years old. its extremely durable.i couldnt be more pleased. quick delivery too.good price also. thanks

this is a great first rocking horse since it's durable, has no sharp or pinchy parts, and is low to the ground. Not all toys need to teach numbers, the alphabet, songs or other "educational" things. Play is critical for development of their motor skills. this is a great addition to your toy collection to develop gross motor skills. And...it's actually fun. It can be used inside or out. It cleans up easily. It was the first toy my daughter went to this Christmas morning.

Besides the fact that my two year old really enjoys this, I find this to be money well spent due to its durability. He's played with this indoors and out. Has left it outside in the rain on several occasions, and other than some very slight sun fading it has held up well. If that weren't enough, my 10 year old, 70 lb son sits on it, and has been caught standing on it a few times without causing damage to the toy. Very sturdy.

My daughter's Infant classroom has 3 of these on the deck and she LOVES them - they can rock pretty high when they get going! What is awesome is that they are super easy to get on and off of and won't knock over as a Toddler tries to kick their foot over. I decided not to buy her one for home since she LOVES it so much at school . . . that way she would always enjoy it :)

Inflatable 'Rody Horse' Children's Ride-On Rocking Horse: Color is Lime Green Inflatable 'Rody Horse' Children's Ride-On Rocking Horse: Color is Lime Green

Reviews

I purchased this for a two year old. The size is perfect, but within one minute she fell over backwards and hit her head (not the best start for X-mas morning). The problem seems to have been she expected it to be a rocking horse. She still rocks, although gently. She hasn't caught on to the jumping. But honestly, I think this is because we haven't been able to inflate it so it feels 'bouncy'. It is stable enough for her to sit on, but she isn't having much fun. I hope it may work better if you use a pump. We tried to blow it up ourselves.

My daughter loves the Rody. She is only 16 months, but likes to play with this toy. I shopped all over the internet for this and was about to buy from Amazon, but found it elsewhere for half the price. [...] had them for so cheap that I bought two (one to save as a gift or spare). Awesome, fun toy for toddlers/preschoolers, but look elsewhere for value.

This was a great toy. My son loves it and he is only one years old. We bought the rocking base at it has been a lot of fun. I would recommend the rocking base for little ones.

This toy is great fun. We first saw this toy at a local German resturant and my daughter who was 10 months at the time like it so much that we bought it as soon as we got home. Once we got the toy she was intrested in it but wasn't sure how it worked so we helped her out. She is now thriteen months and Rody is a part of our daily play time. She can now bounce Rody all by herself and even our neighbors kid who is three is able to use it. I gave Rody a two for educational as there is no real educational value to this toy besides it teaches balance. Enjoy!

We bought this when my daughter was one, but she is just now at 16 months getting into it. She loves bouncing up and down and really gets a kick out of it. It can hold up to 280 lbs so it provides some extra entertainment for her to watch mom or dad jump around too! Not sure it's worth the $50 but maybe she'll start enjoying it even more as she gets older.

Radio Flyer Liberty Spring Horse with Sound Radio Flyer Liberty Spring Horse with Sound

Reviews

Our daughter loves her horse! We love that there is an on/off switch for the sound. It was VERY easy for my husband and I to put together. I had a similar one when I was a kid, so this spring style horse really brings back memories for me and my folks! We're very happy with this purchase.

My 1st grandchild. This fella loves his horse (Stanley). He used a belt to serve as bridle and tries to feed it. Great product for that young child imagination.

Excelente producto, Se los regalè para el 24 de Diciembre, tengo un hijo de 1 año 3meses y una niña de 2 años 7 meses y los dos usan el caballo todos los dìas!!! Solo con verles las caras queda más que satisfecho el pago que hice.

My granddaughter who is two just loves the bouncy zebra toy and she is getting too big for that so I thought maybe she would like this. SHE LOVES IT! She couldn't quite get on it by herself at first but has gotten quite good now. She tells everyone it is MINE and most of the time will not let her big sister on it. It is very well made and I think will last a lifetime, I like that the springs are covered with padded material. The only thing my husband said the rails should be padded also in case the child falls when getting on or off. For the money this is the most durable and well made toy I have ever bought.

Bought this for my little granddaughters (8 and 13 months) for Christmas....they will be the third generation to ride one. Although they are still a little small, they both want up on it everytime they come over to my house. It is very sturdy, and I expect it will last quite a long time. Although they don't recommend over 100 lbs, I tried it and it holds up quite nicely when tested.I bought this because my son loved his so much. I am positive my little granddaughters will enjoy it just as much, and for a long time to come. This is such a classic indoor activity toy the kids can exert energy on when the weather is bad outside. I'm old fashioned about kids and activities - no video games - it's all about bicycles, roller skates, big wheels, swings, merry-go-rounds, and horse....anything that helps build their bodies, and burn their energy. My only recommendation is even when you read the instructions for assembly, it lacks the info that the head is buried deep inside the body, you need to twist and pull to remove it. I mention it because I noticed another reviewer stated that theirs arrived without a head.
