Raggedy Ann is a fictional character created by writer Johnny Gruelle (1880–1938) in a series of books he wrote and illustrated for young children. Raggedy Ann is a rag doll with red yarn for hair. The character was created in 1915 as a doll, and was introduced to the public in the 1918 book Raggedy Ann Stories. A doll was also marketed along with the book to great success. A sequel, Raggedy Andy Stories (1920) introduced the character of her brother, Raggedy Andy, dressed in sailor suit and hat

History

Origins

Gruelle created Raggedy Ann for his daughter, Marcella, when she brought him an old hand-made rag doll and he drew a face on it. From his bookshelf, he pulled a book of poems by James Whitcomb Riley, and combined the names of two poems, "The Raggedy Man" and "Little Orphan Annie." He said, "Why don’t we call her Raggedy Ann?"

Marcella died at age 13 after being vaccinated at school for smallpox without her parents' consent. Authorities blamed a heart defect, but her parents blamed the vaccination. Gruelle became an opponent of vaccination, and the Raggedy Ann doll was used as a symbol by the anti-vaccination movement

Raggedy Ann and Andy in popular culture

Raggedy Ann is sometimes used by national sororities as a mascot: the current incarnation of Delta Gamma's official mascot, the Hannah Doll, is a Raggedy Ann doll, and Ann also is one of the unofficial mascots of the Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority.

Gruelle's home town, Arcola, Illinois, is home to the annual Raggedy Ann & Andy Festival, as well as the Raggedy Ann and Andy Museum.

Different media around the world also have paid tribute to the doll characters. The Japanese video game company Hudson Entertainment created a character based on Raggedy Ann in their Xbox Live Bomberman game called Raggedy Bomb. In an episode of South Park, Stan dressed up as Raggedy Andy for Halloween. His girlfriend was supposed to dress up as Ann, but came as Chewbacca instead. Stan angrily refuses to trick-or-treat with her for making him look so stupid, as he was stuck wearing a Raggedy Andy costume all day as an act of revenge ("Pinkeye"). In another episode of South Park, Raggedy Ann is seen trying to a revive a dead Andy who has been killed by a terrorist explosion ("Imaginationland").

In an episode of My Life as a Teenage Robot, titled "The Raggedy Android", a poorly done human suit for Jenny is made that looks very similar in ways to Raggedy Ann; as well as being an obvious reference to her. There was also a sequel to this episode titled "The Return of the Raggedy Android", though the suit has been improved visually in ways, that looks a bit like a human sized and proportioned Raggedy Ann doll when worn.

My granddaughter was one year old in December. When she opened the Raggedy Ann package she immediately gave it a big hug and carried it around with her all day. It was absolutely perfect for her.

This was on my 4-year-old daughter's list for Santa this year. Afterwards, she has told us repeatedly it was her favorite gift and plays with it more than the other games and toys she received. The colors on the doll and clothing are nice and bright and I like that the outfit is tacked to the doll with sewing thread. I plan to buy her the matching Andy doll to put in her Easter basket.

I ordered Raggedy Ann as a gift for my 6 year old grandson this Christmas. I had given him Raggedy Andy the Christmas he was 2 and he has lately become interested in the notion that Andy has a twin sister. A playmate recently gained a baby sister and he has been I want a little sister. When he heard about Raggedy Ann, he has been asking about Andy's sister. So, I did what any grandmother would have and promised him I'd see if I could find Andy's sister and bring her home for the holidays. The Raggedy Andy was bought at Hallmark because they were selling a special edition but it's the Raggedy Andy that pairs with this Raggedy Ann albeit, unfortunately, the novelty one is an inch smaller. I don't think that will bother him particularly and he should be delighted. She is well made with excellent detail. Made as good as they have been back in the days when these dolls became the rage. Ann is sure to be as beloved by my grandson as her twin brother. I think it will be a happy reunion!

I feel this is a must have for every little girl. This is a good product, although I wish it had come in some sort of presentable box. I do recommend this item.

This doll is exacatly like the one I had as a child, except of course for the design of the fabric. I was afraid it would go 'modern' but it hasn't. It is the same 'old Raggedy Ann'.

My wife loved the doll and she was almost how my wife remembered it. Unfortunantly she is only a 12" doll instead of a 14" doll. She is a little smaller than what she had when she was young and we were hoping for the 14" as stated in the description. However, she brings her so many wonderful memories. She is priceless to us.

Just what I was looking for, a doll that doesn't "do" anything electronically!!! A doll that takes a little bit of imagination!!

Over the past three decades I have purchased twenty to twenty-five Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls as gifts. They go in and out of style and so it is sometimes easy and some times quite difficult to find a "real" Raggedy Ann or Andy...with "shoe button" eyes and a heart which reads "I Love You". Depending on where I have purchased these dolls, they can also be quite expensive. Ordering from Amazon was the easiest and most reasonably priced experience I have ever had. The doll is the traditional Raggedy Ann and the certificate just adds to the presentation of the gift. I'm going this route with all my future purchases.

The doll was great, and received in record time! I expected a wait of several days; however, I received the doll within 3 days of ordering. It came as billed, with certificate of authenticity, and was all that I'd anticipated. I would gladly order from this seller again. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

This doll was for a granddaughter making it 3 generations now who have had the same doll. It is perfect in relation to the old and older generation ladies who had one when they were babies. Yes, they did make them even when the grandma was a baby.

It was smaller than I expected. i had a Raggedy doll when I was a baby and I just wanted to order another one as a keepsake.

My daughter had a Raggedy Andy doll and so of course needed Rageddy Ann. She is very pleased with it, and it's held up well so far to typical play.

This is a cute Raggedy Ann doll. Not outstanding but cute. The quality of the overall look is acceptable but not of a high quality. It seemed to me for the price the size, fabric quality, and overal appearance would have been better. But, all in all, the smile on my granddaughter's face was worth it when she saw it!

The product description is a lie. The eyes are not button eyes, as described. The only reason I decided to order this particular doll was to get one with button eyes. The dolls from the 60's had really pretty black button eyes. This doesn't even come close to the description. Out of the box, my second impression (after being disappointed about the eyes) was "Cheap".

Needed these for nursery decorations for my grandbaby's nursery. Worked great for this purpose.

This book was order for a birthday gift to read to a 3 year old.

This is a very nice book....especially to go with the Raggedy Ann and Andy Dolls, I bought my grandaughter.

I haven't read the book yet because it is for a birthday gift for a two year old, but it has wonderful illustrations and it appears to be perfectly suited as a way to introduce Catie to the Raggedys. It is to accompany a doll I made for her, and I am excited for this to occur.

I like to read with my children (three girls ages 8, 11, and 14). They all enjoyed reading this book with me. It is a classic.

I loved reading this series as a child and I want for my daughter to experience it.

A great addition to our Raggedy Ann tea parties- our granddaughters are 3-5 yrs old and the up-dated story and illustrations are just perfect for helping them bond with a rag-doll from my "back-in-the-day". Priced just right, book dimensions just right for reading to a small audience while enjoying cups of peppermint tea. Thank you!How Raggedy Ann Got Her Candy Heart

Beautifully illustrated. However, the re-write deviates so far from the original as to be disappointing. Again, the arrogance of the re-writer destroys the story. Don't buy it.

Another delightful story of Raggedy Ann!! Not only is the story appealing, but the illustrations are captivating. A tale which allows an accident to be rectified with kindness!! My 3 yr old grandson enjoys this charming book.

I am enjoying being a grandmother so much and part of this enjoyment is passing on pieces of our heritage which includes toys/dolls like Ragedy Ann and Andy. My grandchildren are bi-racial and I came across a lady who makes Ragedy Ann and Andy dolls in all ethnicities. I bought an Ann doll and had her make an Andy doll for the grandson to give in their Easter baskets. These dolls will have Easter bunny ears on and the oldest will also recieve the book "How Raggedy Ann Got Her Candy Heart", and I will also show her the stiched heart on her doll. This story by Johnny Gruelle is a classic for children and when given with a doll that the book is based on is great fun as well as telling a loving story and passing herritage on.

This is the perfect book to introduce little ones to Raggedy Ann. My child just turned 5 and got her first Ann and Andy dolls, and they are even more special to her after reading this story. Perfect for young ages.

Raggedy Ann Stories Raggedy Ann Stories

Reviews

There is nothing better than the story of Raggedy Ann and all of her adventures for a young girl growing up.

This is such a beautifully written book, with amazing illustrations. Written and illustrated by Johnny Gruelle for his daughter Marcella, this is a collection of stories about her dolls, and their magical adventures. My 9 and 5 year old both adore this book, inspiring creative, imaginative play. If you are raising your children to be sensitive, creative, thoughtful, respectful, and are trying to avoid unintelligent, poorly written, corporate driven garbage that fills bookstore shelves, you will love this book. As for any "politically incorrect" passages, (I have yet to find any, perhaps in other Johnny Gruelle books), I have found it is a good opportunity to talk with my children about it - kids get it. But if your kids have been raised on video games, television, and need to be bombarded with stimulation in order to maintain interest, they will definitely be bored. This book is a treasure.

Very disappointing. Seems to be some sort of download copy on cheap paper, with notes indicating unrelated pages, and fuzzy illustration copies in black and white. There are several excellent books of original Raggedy Ann Stories out there, with the original illustrations in beautiful color. I know this because I've searched them out in book stores after receiving this worthless copy, which I could not possibly give as a gift! Skip this one and keep looking.

These are well produced/read versions of the classic stories. A bit "old" for my 2 year olds, as it didn't hold their intrest as well as some others we have purchased. (Hence the 4 starts) I'd say it's a 5 star for older kids who may be familiar with the stories already. NOTE: the age of the stories and the "mind set" from the time they were written may offend some, they are not the "Politically Correct" stories of today; can been seen as slightly racist, as are many stories from that time.

I'd have to agree that the stories are charming from an adult perspective. However, as in many pieces of classic literature the representation of the African-American maid "Dinah" working for a extra white family is pretty bad. In this particular collection Dinah appears only once, but there is an illustration replete with head wrap, laundry wringer, and extra large lips. Dinah is also the only character who gets the colloquial speech.."Jess lemme hang Miss Raggedy on de line in de bright sunshine foh haff an hour..". Since she only appears in one story it is avoidable - but it's there. Buyer beware.
