Melvin Goes to Dinner [VHS]ReviewsNever heard of this movie, just cruising through looking for something different. Found this and read some of the reviews and said what the heck. If I don't like it after 20 minutes, I'll just get something else. I was hooked into this movie within 15 minutes and enjoyed every minute of it. So if you are looking for a hidden gem, here it is. On the down side is the fact that the 2003 film Melvin Goes To Dinner, directed by first timer Bob Odenkirk, is a watered down yuppy version of the great 1981 Louis Malle film My Dinner With Andre. On the up side is that if you are going to imitate something, at least choose something great, for the imitation, while not great, is likely to be good, which My Dinner With Melvin is. It was written by actor/playwright Michael Blieden, adapted from his play Phyro-Giants, and had a no name cast, as opposed to 2001's similarly themed HBO film Dinner With Friends, which starred Dennis Quaid, Toni Collette, Andie McDowell, and Greg Kinnear.... the film really does chicken out of putting its characters in emotional deep water. Yes, admissions of fetishes and infidelities can titillate, but given that this was filmed only a year and a half after 9/11 you'd think there might be a touch of political dischord thrown in. They argue a bit over religion, but no character seems willing to really stand up for anything. They are all, in that sense, preening wimps. Still, I only wish there were deeper characters. Whereas Shawn and Gregory discourse on life and determinism, the four yuppies talk of things like ghosts with all the depth that a post-Angels In America America can muster, and then are amazed at each others' supposed depth, and how stimulating their conversation is. And when I reference Angels In America it's not a mere throwaway diss. There's a reason for the connection. Call it Post-Intellectualism. Call it, `Show, don't tell.' Call it a nice try that settles for copouts. There are too many synchronicities and pallid contrivances that line up to get these four people together in the first place, and then reveal so much about themselves. Yet, it succeeds just enough that I can recommend this noble attempt, especially since the film's start and end are strong- and I mean literally the first and last few seconds of each. You may not wish you were able to join in the conversation, as you did with My Dinner With Andre, but it's still a few notches above anything you'll overhear in a real restaurant. For that, I recommend this DVD. I caught about three-quarters of this movie on IFC a couple months back and wanted to see the whole thing. The only problem is, most video stores don't carry the title. So I decided to buy it and watch the entire thing. I'm glad I did. The dialogue was pretty quick paced, intelligent and insightful. It examines the inner-thoughts of four people brought together by coincicence who end up sharing intimate details of their lives only to find out that one if not all the other guests feels secretly the same way. There are some uncomfortable scenes that reflect normal life all too well, and that is part of it's charm. I read that this movie is based on a play so there are bascially four main characters, but they do manage to squeeze in a couple of cameos that are interesting. All in all a good "art movie". I first saw this movie on cable (ShowTime). I just caught the last 30 minutes or so. I was so intrigued by the portion that I saw, I had to get the DVD. You probably won't recognize the actors or the producers names but the entire project is well done. It contains some adult situations (in the language) so this is something you may not want your kids to watch. The 'film' (it was done mainly with digital cameras) was adapted from a play that ran for more than a year in LA and the producers decided (quite against the grain of Hollywood thinking) to actually use the main actors from the stage production. The result is you will be artfully and masterfully entertained as you watch. Might this movie define a voyeuristic experience ? Michael Blieden wrote the stage play, wrote the screenplay, was one of the key actors, and was responsible for the editing of the movie production. Bob Odenkirk (Emmy award writer for Saturday Night Live and the Ben Stiller Show) directed the movie and was one of the main driving forces in financing the movie. His wife, Naomi Odenkirk (a well known Hollywood talent agent), along with D.J. Paul and Jeff Sussman used their resources to convince other talented actors to do cameos and participate in this movie production as well as to put their own 'good money down'. I won't even tell you the premise of the movie. View it for the talented piece that it is and for the 1000's of hours of effort required to give it life. You will be amply rewarded ! I had mixed feelings about this one. I went into it knowing that it was largely based on conversation with very little vestiges of plot, so I was pleasantly surprised to find that it all sort of falls into place to mean something at the end. All in all, the conversational elements are richly written and very appealing. However, that's the end... it takes a while for it to be truly enriching. Sometimes the conversation is such that you feel like you're in it, and that's probably as close to good as the cinematography and editing gets, considering in general it really isn't that well done. I can forgive the hand-held look and a lot of how the image turned out from its independent production value, but try as I might I couldn't help but feel a lot of the work was just shoddy camera operation. Sometimes the conversation isn't very appealing and I can't help but think, "I'm obviously not in this conversation because I wouldn't go there." So there's that element too, a sort of discursive alienation one feels when the conversation feels less than involving. Mostly, however, the dialog is great and the characters are amazing. There are some really great performances all around and it's definitely worth a viewing or two, or more, but even as I say that I can't help but think that the play version of this story must be absolutely amazing because of mostly the format of the two media. --PolarisDiB Average Rating:![]() |

The Office - Season FiveReviewsThis season of the Office is so funny! You will laugh and fall in love with each character more and more! I would recommend it to anyone who is an Office fan. This show just gets better and better - no spoilers here - if you like the others just buy it The Office season 5 is a great set to get if you like the office tv series. Most likely you have already seen these episodes on tv on NBC or on TBS or whatever regional tv station has airing rights. Not much to review, you either have watched the episodes and would like to have them on dvd, or you never have in which case, first watch them and then decide for yourself if you would like to have them in your personal collection. This review is for the Blu-ray format only. Getting straight to the point, I have encountered a manufacturing defect during the episode entitled "The Surplus." Nowhere in any of the Amazon reviews, which are primarily DVD reviews, have I seen anyone mention this problem. Approximately 17:34 into the viewing of the episode a subtitle (EXCLAIMS IN ANNOYANCE) appears on the screen. I have been able to find other customers who have confirmed this. I sent the following email to NBC/Universal on January 28, 2010: To whom it may concern, I purchased the Blu-ray format of The Office: Season Five and approximately 17:34 into the viewing of the episode entitled "The Surplus," a subtitle (EXCLAIMS IN ANNOYANCE) appears on the screen. So far, I have not seen this happen during any other episode, I still need to view disc four. Could you please inform me as to what is being done to replace this disc and when an error free product will be available to the public. If you are unable to, could you direct me to the person who can? I appreciate any assistance in resolving this issue. [end of email] NBC/Universal has not responded to this email or the two subsequent emails I have sent. I have returned and received a full refund for this product. I urge you not to purchase this item or to at least view it immediately and look for this defect, as you will then have the opportunity to return it. It is possible that this error is limited, however, having no response from NBC/Universal...who's to say? I would appreciate if the purchasers of the DVD format would check for this quality flaw as well and post a comment either way. At $42, we should expect and receive a quality product. NBC/Universal has not given us that and does not seem to care. The Office is a great show, one I'll watch into season 32 if still airing. This season was very funny, with some great stories, and some of my favorite episodes, but saw a show that is losing its focus. For instance (spoilers) the introduction of Holly was great, she worked well and the show and was a great foil for Michael, funny, dorky, and very likable. But after only a few episodes she's gone. Similarly, we get the Andy/Dwight/Angela love triangle come to a hilarious peak, but without any real consequences or fallout. The story just ends without a whole lot of mention. Then we get one of my favorite story lines, the Michael Scott Paper Company, which ends as quickly as it began. (End Spoilers) I guess that was the biggest problems with season 5, lots of great ideas that aren't fully realized. That being said the show is still very funny, and the overall melancholy of season 4 is long gone. The show is great, and I'm hoping come season 6, the show will take these great ideas, and really run with them, rather than end them abruptly. Average Rating:![]() |

The Office: Season FourReviewsSuch a funny show! Odd to get used to at first - based on the British show - but very comedic! The product came before it was scheduled to and in great condition. I really liked the deleted scenes on this Season 4 of The Office! Was very entertaining & delivered on the chuckles meter quite well. For any Office fan,I can promise very good quality of the DVD's & only complaint I have is that the episodes weren't longer!! (But then that's the whole problem with The Office for me......it's never long enough! Just love, love, love The Office & have just purchased Season Five!) I bought this as a gift for a friend in the states...it was delivered within the stated time scale and entertained my friend to the desired effect Though the third season of "The Office" was, for the most part, still hilarious television at its finest, it sort of diverged from what made the show so endearing...the relationships. While I commended the writers for doing such a thing to bring new life into the show, I also have to say that Season Four was a welcome return to what The Office does best. Despite being cut to just 14 episodes do to the TV Writer's strike of 2007-2008, this season manages to still provide a laugh a minute while also getting back to the core of the series, that being the relationships such as Jim/Pam and Dwight/Angela. Michael Scott keeps doing his hilarious thing, but what sets The Office apart from all other comedy sitcoms is its ability to keep developing the characters and maintaining its quality level (e.g. not turning into a soap opera). This season did not provide a drop off in that category as Jim & Pam "shippers" will be delighted at the return of that complicated romance, as well as the tension that always exists between Dwight and Angela. Thus, despite its shortened stature, I considered Season Four to be better (quality-wise) than the one preceding it. Watch with confidence knowing that the writers/creators/producers are still able to keep things fresh and hilarious. I loved the office season 4! My favorite season after season 2. It was very Entertaining & I felt all the characters have grew more with there personality. Sad there wasn't many episodes but still a classic. No episode let me down. Ryan being Michaels boss was a great touch. Get this season if you have yet to own it,, you won't be let down. Average Rating:![]() |

Is a season of The Office with less episodes still a great season? That seems to be the debate among the Emmy-winning sitcom's faithful audience in regard to season four, which like every program in 2007 and 2008 suffered due to the Writers Guild strike... |

The Office - Season OneReviewsA great show, but odd when you first begin watching it. It takes a little getting used to because it's so strangely funny. Very good and addicting once you get into it. Based on the British show, So Funny! The first season of The Office is what caught my attention. The show only gets funnier as time passes. Only had a couple episodes, which were OK. For this series, they do get better as they progress. I just started watching this show and now I'm hooked. If I could do it over I would just buy the box set with seasons 1-5: expensive up front but much cheaper in the long run. So look for mine used here soon. I purchased this DVD on a whim during Black Friday -- I had heard a lot about it but hadn't yet seen the show. This first season is short (6 episodes) but good. Steve Carrell plays Michael Scott, the totally clueless and obnoxious regional manager of a paper supply company located in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He thinks is is smart, funny and the best friend to all who work for him, but in actuality he is barely tolerated by his staff. It took a while for me to begin to enjoy this show as there were moments that were too close to home from my own time in a office. As the episodes unfolded (and particularly in the second season which I am now watching) they are becoming more funny to me and this is quickly becoming a favorite of ours. One thing I thought was very interesting -- my 15-year-old daughter loves the show. I had thought that to truly "get" the show you would have needed to have some work experience to set up the framework for the humor. That is obviously not the case since she has never held a job or had a boss. The humor is strong enough that she is able to enjoy the show and has become a huge fan. Definitely will be buying all the seasons! Average Rating:![]() |

The British sitcom The Office has the most devoted following this side of Monty Python, so an American remake seemed doomed. Amazingly, the remake actually finds its own enjoyable version of the original's uncanny comedy of embarrassment... |

Fisher-Price Infant Bouncer Seat - Perfectly PurpleReviewsI WAS NOT SURE IF WE HAVE TO BUY THIS ITEM, BUT HONESTLY IS THE BEST!! MY DAUGHTER LOVE IT. SHE IS VERY CALM. SHE SLEEPS VERY WELL. ALL PEOPLE SAYS,,, OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH THE COLOR OF THE BOUNCER CHAIR IS SOOOOO PRECIOUS!!! REALLY!!! IF U ARE LOOKING FOR A BOUNCING CHAIR THIS IS THE BEST OPTION, FOR A BABY GIRL OF COURSE I dont know what we would have done without this. My daughter practically lived in it until she could sit up on her own and crawl out. :) The vibrations were wonderful for her on both fussy/ non fussy days and once she was old enough to play with the bugs and pull the music she was overjoyed. I can't recommend this enough! Our baby girl has spent a lot of time in this bouncer! She loves kicking her feet to make it bounce. The toys on the bar catch her eye, although the butterfly in the middle tends to clack loudly if she is bouncing excitedly. The vibrations soothe her and we haven't had to change the battery in the four months we've been using it. The purple covering is easy to remove and wash in case of any accidents. Great buy! my sister insisted on us getting one, so she bought us one when our daughter was about 5 weeks also, and let me tell you, i don't know what we would have done without it! she loved it, the vibrating helped calm her and she loved when we bounced it for her. she is now 6 months old and while we dont use it as much, we do still get use out of it. it is definately well worth buying!!! This items was purchased for my 5 week old grandbaby...She was very fussy ..The minute she is placed in the Bouncer she totally relaxes, coos, smiles...awesome item ...I would higly recommend for fussy babies. Fisher-Price Color-Changing Sunshade 2-pk.ReviewsDoesn't work at all....the shades barely change color and they don't fit well in the back seat windows. I first tried putting these on my windows when it was cold outside. They never stayed on the window until the warmer weather arrived. Once I could get them to stay on the windows, they worked well for short period of time. Just a few months later, they no longer change to a darker color. I have never been so disappointed in a product. I too bought this item for my newborn daughter thinking it looked like a good idea. But it wouldnt stick or change color making it useless. I called Fisher Price and they told me it is made by the company Blue Ridge. The phone number for Blue Ridge is 1-850-835-0100 you have to leave a message for there customer support to call you back. Im still waiting on my call back. But Im returning this product no matter what. Unlike the previous reviews, I did not have the problem with the shade sticking. However, I did notice it never did darken. Come to find out the my car has UV protection on the windows, and it was long enough ago that I no longer have the packaging. I tried the Fisher-Price website for customer support, but they do not give out numbers to call. I put im two surveys - even on those they did not ask my name and phone number. Seems sort of a shame. Maybe I'm an idiot. I went to the store to buy something to keep the sun out of my 4 month old's eyes. I looked at the products, thought this one was cute, and thought "it must be good because it costs so much." I got it home, and after some wetting and washing- finally got it to stick to my window. HOWEVER- there are millions of horrible air bubbles trapped underneathe and it looks like the cheapest, trashiest piece of garbage. My husband saw it and told me to take it down because he thought it looked so crappy. And he's not a person that would generally even express an opinion.... Average Rating:![]() |

Essential Mozart: 32 Of His Greatest MasterpiecesReviewsI love this CD - I am a Mozart fan and I own many complete works - but this 'taster' just makes me want to listen to more - Mozart! The CD's had scratchy sounds throughout all of the music. So it is not good at all. I was eagerly looking forward to this Decca compilation, but although the music is superb, the inconsistent volume was very annoying. I was constantly adjusting the volume control. This lets the whole thing down in my opinion, and is inexcusable from a world class company such as Decca. I doubt I'll bother playing it again. I bought a second one as a gift, but won't be inflicting it on anyone - have just sold it on Ebay. I just cant say enough about this collection. It used to be that you had to spend a fortune to get Mozart's best hits; a few on each album. Now, you can buy them all at once and dirt cheap! very nice This CD I heard first on KUSC, L.A.'s publicly supported classical station during one of their fund drives. I had already made my yearly donation and couldn't afford the additional donation requirement to receive Essential Mozart as a gift, so I meekly bought a used copy from Amazon. I had to have it! It is a beautiful representation of Mozart's work. By the way, if you are looking for a good classical station where you can get informative tidbits about the composers, KUSC is it, and it is available to the world through their computers. Just remember to send a donation every year or so if you like the station. Average Rating:![]() |

DanzónReviewsDanzon is an excellent record! I have been listening to TISQ since they began in the eighties. They are supurb musicians all the way around. Their use of the standard emsemble string quartet seems to get brighter and more astounding with each record. A good example of the versitility of the band is heard with Girl From Pathetique. They stretch their range here and take it a little bit outside. The whole CD is consistent, masterfully arranged and performed. If you have heard this band, this one might be a good place to start. Having Paquito D'Rivera is an extra, EXTRA bonus. I keep hoping they will get the attention they deserve. Great spin! Average Rating:![]() |

The Great Wave: Price Revolutions and the Rhythm of HistoryReviewsWell written and detailed analysis of a recurring pattern the author has identified across the last 6 centuries. The book is quite thick, but most of it are bibliographical and reference notes (very detailed) and a lot of charts, so reading is easy and smooth. The theory is well presented and clear to understand. Of course the conclusion cannot be definitive, as we are in the midst of the pattern and as usual patterns are easily recognizable only once they're complete. But the author does a good work of presenting the recurring and probable elements that would help identify what phase of the cycle (or wave) we are currently into. Please bear in mind that secular trends play out over many years although our consciousness tends to be stricken by shorter term events. In any case, a very relevant book for current times... Almost every day reading the news headlines in 2007-2008, I see more confirmation of the Hackett Fisher's thesis. Runaway inflation led by energy prices, profiteering and hoarding of commodities, increasing gap between rich and poor, rising crime rates. These have all been seen in each great wave, each price revolution. We're at the culmination of the fourth such wave in the last 800 years. Chaos, severe social dislocation, and war followed the previous three instances. Can we beat the odds this time? Economics is a sub-set of history, with exactly the predictive power of other forms of historiography, no more no less. When economics is morphed into an operating ideology, societies suffer. David Hackett Fischer is a historian, one of the most consistently interesting historians of the American Colonial and early Federal periods, and one of the few historians these days willing to stick his neck out and venture big hypotheses in answer to big questions. "The Great Wave" is such a risk-taking book, an attempt to correlate 'waves' in prices of basic necessities with huge social upheavals. Academic economists, and simple readers familiar with notions of economic cycles such as Kondratieff waves, have tended to treat this book with skepticism and disdain. Full-time historians likewise have looked askance at even the attempt to write such an out-sized study of virtually everything. I'm pleasantly surprised to discover that the general reading public, as reflected in amazon reviews, finds The Great Wave to be a worthwhile and thought-provoking book. Fischer maintains that there have been four great waves of inflation, in the thirteenth, sixteenth, eightteenth, and twentieth centuries. The four waves "shared many qualities... All had the same movements of prices and price-relatives, falling real wages, rising returns to capital, and growing gaps between the rich and the poor. Each... developed increasing instability, and ended in a shattering crisis that combined social disorder, political upheaval, economic collapse, and demographic contraction." Well, friends, you'll have to read the book to find out where we are surfing on the fourth wave. Unlike some reviewers, I find Fischer's writing style cumbersome and repetitious, and certainly NOT the main attraction of his work. Rather it's a lot like skiing through wet sticky slush when you expected to be telemarking. But long uncomfortable journeys often make the best tales, and difficult books often leave the best afterthoughts. The Great Wave is such a book. (Note that used hardcovers are available for very modest prices.) DHF outlines the various collapses of currenices (manifested in price increases) over the past 1,000 years or so. Since the introduction of specie and the idea of intermediate value, there have been wild swings in their percieved values. This is a view of relatively "modern" usage of money and other intermediate specie. The over-arching concept is that these debasements take place over long swings of time, and create their own economic externalities. You can argue about DHF's validity with respect to economic theory, but as a great trader said, "If Jesus invested US$0.02 at 3%, he would now have all the money in the world" i.e. no "currency" last forever. There is nothing inherently more sound about the current system - if confidence is eroded through debasement (and it always is), then the system eventually collapses over a long period. The Roman denari took 500 years to lose 99% of its original value, the US$, Yen etc took 100 years. So where do we go from here? this was one of the most captivating books I have ever read. Mr. Fischer tells the story of western history in a completely new and fascinating way; he tells the story of modern western history in the language of price fluctuations and inflation. I found this to be fresh way of looking at the live of people from our past. Mr. Fischer is not only a thourough researcher, but a good storyteller as well. I did not, however, agree with some of his opinions of modern economic theory, but respect his work and enjoys his writings. Average Rating:![]() |

Fisher-Price was founded in 1930, hardly the best time to launch a new business as the shadows of the Depression still loomed over American business. Still, Herman Fisher, Irving Price and Helen Schelle combined their diverse manufacturing and retailing experience to create our toy company and confidently brought 16 wooden toys to the International Toy Fair in New York City. The whimsical nature and magical surprises of those first toys quickly caught on and became the hallmarks of Fisher-Price ever since.
• In 1969, at the age of 71, Herman Fisher retired as President of Fisher-Price.
• In 1969, we were acquired by The Quaker Oats Company.
• In 1991, Quaker Oats spun off its Fisher-Price division and the company became an independent, publicly traded company.
• In November, 1993, stockholders of Fisher-Price, Inc. and Mattel, Inc. approved a merger under which Fisher-Price became a wholly owned subsidiary of Mattel. This merger ignited remarkable growth for us in international markets and through product acquisitions.
• After Mattel's acquisition of Tyco Toys in 1997, the Fisher-Price name became the umbrella brand over all Mattel's infant and preschool lines.
More details:
• 100% of parents in the United States are familiar with the Fisher-Price brand name.
• Worldwide gross sales of Fisher-Price Brands was $1.9 billion in 2004.
• Fisher-Price is a wholly owned subsidiary of Mattel, Inc., the worldwide leader in toy products, with $3.2 billion for Mattel Brands, $5.1 billion for Mattel, Inc., including Fisher-Price Brands, in 2004. Mattel's best-selling brands are Barbie®, Hot Wheels®, Fisher-Price® and American Girl®.
