PostHeaderIcon Board Games

A board game is a game in which counters or pieces that are placed on, removed from, or moved across a "board" (a premarked surface, usually specific to that game). Like any other form of entertainment, board games can represent nearly any subject. However, most well-known mass-market board games are generally simple all ages family entertainment. Most celebrated board games, such as chess, go/weiqi, xiangqi, shogi, or oware, have been classics for centuries, and are considered to have intense strategic depth.

There are many different types of board games. As the term denotes a type or form of game, rather than a genre, there is a wide range of different styles of board games. At the most basic level, they can be broken down by games that have no inherent theme (but could still be 'about' something) and those with a definite subject, or even story; compare checkers with Cluedo/Clue. Otherwise, games are often broken down by an arbitrary mix of game mechanics and subject matter.

The blanket was nice and colorful. I was expecting something a little more fluffy, but my Granddaughter loved it.

Received item very fast. In excellent condition. Any little girl would love it.

I am very happy with the purchase of this Little Mermaid Blanket. It's even more beautiful up close. It's so soft, and it's just the right size. I have another Little Mermaid Throw, and it's just too small to really even use. But this product is perfect in size for a throw, not too small and not too big. It is also perfect in the print, it's not faded one bit like my other throw. Especially if you like the Little Mermaid, I definately recommend this blanket.

Black Laptop Buddha Board Black Laptop Buddha Board

I'm going to have to agree with all those other reviews... if you're even reading this, you should buy the buddha board right now. It's just that awesome. UPS delivered my buddha board this morning. I brought it to the daycare where I work, and it was a huge hit. Initially, I was terrified that the delicate-looking surface would get scratched by some kid pushing the brush too hard or that maybe someone would sneak up with a crayon, but there have been no such catastrophes as yet (I think partly due to my obsessive hovering). First, I sat down with a 2-year-old who looked especially fascinated with it, putting the brush in his hand and guiding it with my hand, telling him every few seconds to be more gentle and to barely touch the tip of the brush to the paper. After about a minute of this, he continued independently (pushing slightly harder than I was comfortable with, but not dangerously so), blackening every inch of the surface with short, fat brush strokes. He was mesmerized... it was hard to get the brush back when his mother arrived. Shortly after, I brought the buddha board to the preschool room, which had five 3-5 year-olds left for the day. Pretty soon they all abandoned the blocks and dinosaurs on the rug to see my newest toy. The promise of trying it out quickly prompted them to clean up the classroom, and then they each took turns (~2 minutes each). While one child painted (patiently enduring my nagging to be more gentle and use less water), the others intently watched new patterns appear and old ones fade, waiting patiently for their turns. Their pace was perfect--they were focused enough on small details that by the time they had painted from one side of the board to the other, their starting point had dried and was ready for a new design. We rotated through the children for at least 25 minutes without needing to wait for it to dry. The only other toy I've seen hold their attention so well is the computer. We'll see how soon the novelty wears off... I'll be bringing it back monday to show my boss, who is now considering buying a few buddha boards for the daycare. I didn't buy the buddha board for the kids, though. I found it while looking for a way to practice Japanese and Chinese without messes and without wasting ink and paper. Thus far, it has served this purpose marvelously. Watching the children play has taught me to pace myself with smaller, slower strokes. This way, I can return to the top of the board once I've filled it and find a dry surface ready for filling. I think my kana is already improving :-)

The Buddha Board is an interesting concept. It's neat at first, but the novelty wears off quickly. Draw something, then it disappears... draw something, then it disappears. It would probably be more fun for a child than an adult. It would actually be great for kids because it just uses water and won't make a mess.

I saw this while vacationing in The Big Sur. At a place called "Treebones". They had it in their shop. It was a bit over-priced to my way of thinking. So, when I got home I looked it up and got it cheaper on Amazon.com. This is a fun and relaxing item. Some may call it a "toy". But I think folks of all ages can enjoy this rather Zen item. It will bring out the artist in anyone!

My daughter (2.5 years old) loves this. Good fun for kids who like to draw. It's water based so no much mess is created.

I've had the Buddha Board for years and it's a great tool for relaxation and creativity. My recent purchase was for a birthday gift; my friend loved it and now her dad wants one, too!

Chalk Board Brief Case Chalk Board Brief Case

Reviews

For the price this is an okay toy. It has a chalkboard on one side and also includes a dry erase section, but I found both a little tricky to erase fully. I was hoping to use it for travel and keep my son's crayons, drawing items etc. but the most excitement he had was opening and closing it. I wish I would saved the money to our of the other more elaborate doodle type travel pads, more suited to a car seat. Our friends purchased another brand with more options and they rave about it. I can see why.

We gave this to our daughter about 4 years ago when she was in preschool. She is STILL using it, takes it on car trips, especially, or plays hangman with her older siblings while waiting. We are about to order a replacement because it has been that useful and wonderful. Cannot recommend it highly enough!

Reading other reviews I made sure to "prime" the chalk board (twice) by taking a piece of chalk and rubbing it sideways over the entire chalkboard. Works great! Katie (3 yrs.) loves to use the eraser & hides away her chalk in the sliding section. I did not show her how to use the white board, due to the smart advise of another review about accidently getting marker on the carpet by turning it over to use the other side without completely cleaning the white board. Loving the portability of it!!! Ever child loves to mess with chalk, & I like practicing the alphabet.

It was not as big as I thought it would be. The chalkboard side needs a wet towel in order for it to get cleaned. The dry erase board will not come completely clean and we have only used the pen provided. Most of the chalk was broken in the box when we received it. The eraser is very thin and almost sounds like it is scraping the board.

My grandson loves the chalkboard/whiteboard. It is built into a handy carrying case that holds chalk, dry erase markers, and erasers. I was disappointed in the eraser though. It is a tiny one and is not made of the absorbent material most erasers are. It feels like more of a twiney type of material and it leaves quite a bit of chalk dust behind. I am going to buy my grandson a regular chalkboard eraser as the one included with this set was definitely inferior quality.

This game is good for learning how to: count, keep bowling score. It pretty fun, younger children will like this more than older ones. It will get old pretty quick for older children.

My kids love to bowl, so when I saw this in a store, I knew they'd love it. It's fun, it's easy to play, and games go pretty fast. My 5 year old and 8 year old play it quite often, I play too because they don't understand the scoring yet. Good fun!

Reviews

When I started to apply this- started out pretty good. However, when I got to the last section (the part with the skateboard), it was pretty difficult to transfer it to the wall- it actually ripped in several places because it was sticking to itself. Finally got it on- but you can still see the the rips- not great

I bought this decal to put on my sons wall. It looks really cool. The price was great too. The only problem I had with it was putting it on the wall. It came in three pieces, which did make it a little easier, but the biggest piece kept sticking to itself and was a major pain to put on the wall. It actually ended up ripping in a few places, but you can't tell when it is on the wall. I would still buy it again though.

Saitek Eclipse II Keyboard (PK02AU) Saitek Eclipse II Keyboard (PK02AU)

Reviews

Been keyboarding for 35 year or so and always had the best of best when it comes to keyboards. Have to give up my "Classic Option 101 Keyboard" by IBM - both of them a work and home. They were just too much on the tactile response and it was beginning to fatigue my joints. So, I tried the Eclipse III. BIG MISTAKE! Its keystrokes are very mushy and it was way too WIDE. Felt like I was reaching for the stars to get my mouse and the keys are spread out too much. This keyboard had a well-built feel to it, the keystrokes provided ample tactile feedback to fingertips, the keys are big and nice yet compact but still spaced well, it's the classic 101 layout for the most part, there is a small knob to adjust the lighting and you can still use you own wrist support or theirs. In a word this keyboard is just AWESOME for day or night, home or work, etc. I'm buying another for work. NOTE: Some will prefer the mushy Eclipse III more for it less force to hit the keys however it will dramatically increase you errors if you are a super-fast typist like me. You cannot go wrong with this keyboard for the price.

I purchased this for my husband as a birthday present since our other keyboard was getting well aged. I am pleased with the purchase and so is he. He likes the light up feature and the spring in the keys. He also like stability when he uses is for his PC games such as COD Modern Warfare 2.

I bought this keyboard to replace the one that came with my HP desktop computer, which, while functional, was kind of noisy and also ugly. I'm very pleased with it. The illumination has the practical benefit of making everything very easy to see in low light. Since I'm often typing late at night when the lighting in my office isn't all that great, that's appreciated. And, of course it's kind of cool looking. (I prefer the purple and blue lights, depending upon my mood, but haven't really used the red.) Reviews said this keyboard was quiter than most. Well, yeah, it probably is somewhat, but I wouldn't exactly call it quiet. It makes much more sound than a laptop keyboard, for instance. I often type while on the phone, and so would prefer a keyboard that can't be heard by whomever I'm speaking with. While I haven't asked anyone, I think people probably can hear it. So, it isn't as quiet as I would have wished but that isn't a dealbreaker. This is why I give it 4 stars instead of 5. Plugs in and works immediately, with no drivers to install. I'm a web designer and am on the computer all day, so it's important to me to have a good solid keyboard, not too huge, that looks good, and, most importantly, functions really well. This fits the bill. I really have been enjoying the Saitek Eclipse II keyboard and think you probably will, too.

Very plaesed so far seems well built. comfortable for my big hands and my wives. I game and she's a teacher with a lot of homework.

I was looking for an ergonomic backlit keyboard, but apparently those two traits don't exist. Therefore, I settled on this because it looked pretty nice. I enjoy the 3 different colors (kind of like a mood ring, the RED looks awesome). The price was great, and the attachable/detachable wrist rest comes in handy. It is adjustable, so you can bring it flush with the edge of the keyboard and not have a space in between - like so many of the pictures show. The one thing I DON'T like about it was that the media control buttons (play, pause, skip, volume up/down) do NOT light up. How rediculous is that?!?!? They are to the side of the intensity dial, but still it is hard to remember which button does which action.

My kids and I love this movie! We love Jumanji as well and I didn't know it was made by the same person! Two thumbs up!!

Good script, good story line, but one minor actor problem. Shirley Temple...if she could do it at age 7 (very well by the way), than one actor with charisma could do movies like this one. It's not entirely believable script but it's creative and I like the sarcasm. The older brother was not a very good actor compared to his younger brother. That was until the Astronaut (Dax Shepard) came in......the older brother still weren't All that great but his younger brother and the Astronaut should have won an Emmy, a Golden globes, and a VIP ticket to the MTV movie awards were everyone claps and cheers on Que. The above sentence may have been a little sarcasm but J. Favreau and C. Allsburg have Creative talent. Four starts; nothing more because IMO they should have hired Macaulay Culkin from Home Alone. The actors-over-artist were good but the artist (the script writers and Allsburg) obviously have creative minds. This is for the Blu-Ray edition; same movie just high-def.

I bought this dvd because I saw part of it on TV. It's not usually the type of movie that interest me, but when it came on I was immediately "hooked". Despite the ton of commercials I stayed interested. I was unable to watch the entire movie so I looked for it and ordered it. I bought it so that my nephew and grandson would have something new to watch when they come to visit. Even though it is geared for children, specifically boys, it was interesting enough to hold my attention and to make me want to see the complete movie. I recommend it highly for anyone who has boys to entertain. It's suspenseful and fun and teaches a valuable life lesson.

Very annoying to see two brothers screaming one at the other for two hours, even with a happy ending, in a nutshell that's the story... Also, who needs a second Jumanji.

Great action movie. Once it got going, it never slowed down. Lots of fun. The only complaint I have is that I found the depiction of the teenage girl extremely sexist - and I am not a feminist! She was shown in visually sexual manner and as extremely self-centered. If the objective of the character's portrayal was to depict how a teenage sister might be seen by their younger brothers, the part was very well played by the young actress. If the part was scripted to sex up the movie or include some off-beat humor, I suspect many would find the portrayal offensive. The script did a good job of showing friction between two brothers of differing ages and their reconciliation.

[LP Record] Down Home With Tennessee Ernie Ford [LP Record] Down Home With Tennessee Ernie Ford

Reviews

Jeff Rollins once told me that he used to listen to the music of Tennessee Ernie Ford which his mother loved. Not only is this a wonderful CD, it teaches the younger crowd of Americans that we have a heritage of hymnals and American Music. Frank Sinatra had a marvelous recording of "What Is America To Me." John Wayne excelled in his CD full of American narrations, in particular "America We Love Her." Now is the time to recognize this type of musical genre at the is time of year when we recognize our dead heroes of times past. Music helps to sooth the savage beast we all have at times which needs taming. Irritation because of ignorance of others can be lessened by this kind of music.

Part of the clacker with stripes was broken off. I had to ht glue gun it back on. Then, after usage by my students, the screw part came undone. Had to hammer the screw the nut wouldn't come off. It works now. I had to tell my students not to clack it so hard but it's functional.

What can I say? It's a " t o y ". lol Cute, but you can't write on it with chalk at all. If you need a quick and cheap working clapper board for a video project, you'll need to print out a graphic of a real white dry erase type clapper board from the web, and apply the print out to the toy, and then put a clear plastic film or clear tape over it to make it a working clapper board. I did this with mine while I was waiting for a real clapper board to show up a week later. The toy worked just fine for my production durring the wait.

I bought this for my son because he loves making videos. I was disappointed with the size - it's only about 10" x 12" and it's not very durable. But he liked it and it made a fun Christmas gift. It's not bad for a piece of room decor, but if you want a real one to actually use - this isn't it.

I dont actualy have this toy but I've seen them use them in the movies and I'm a big time director so I know what their for I may have given it a very big amount for fun but thats when were not making a movie & if you dont have a camera so I'd recomend buying it for I am buying one for myself BUY THIS TOY !!!!!

You have probably seen this when they make movies. Its a remake of the Hollywood clapper board. Use it with your home videos to make editing easier or maybe just for fun. measures 7 x 8.

deck sleves are useless if you want to do anything besides prevent your foils from getting scraped get the hard single cases if you want to keep you cards from getting bent do research before you buy an item its not hard just go to you local mtg retailer they have them typically.

Has little shiny circles saying "ultra pro" on every sleave. This branding is cheesy & covers up some of the card. Also this wasn't apparent before purchase.

I got the card sleeves fast but they weren't really what I thought they'd be. They're kind of flimsy but I inserted index cards to strengthen them. Like the other customer review, the sleeves were slippery and showed fingerprints on the back. That didn't really matter to me, though. Overall, for the price, the card sleeves are a good deal.

The card sleeves got to me pretty quickly which I was happy about but they're very slippery. I was surprised when I first picked them up because they slipped right out of my hand. The slipperyness does go away after the cards being used for a little while though. The other thing about them is that the back of the protector isn't smooth like how I was hoping. It's actually very susceptiable to markings like scratches and even oil from one's fingers will leave a mark. It was annoying a first but it's really not a big deal so overall I'd say this is a pretty decent item.

History

Board games have been played in most cultures and societies throughout history; some even pre-date literacy skill development in the earliest civilizations. A number of important historical sites, artifacts and documents exist which shed light on early board games. Some of these include:

* The Jiroft civilization Game Boards
* Senet has been found in Predynastic and First Dynasty burials of Egypt, c. 3500 BC and 3100 BC respectively. Senet is the oldest board game known to have existed, having been pictured in a fresco found in Merknera's tomb (3300-2700 BC).
* Mehen is another ancient board game from Predynastic Egypt.
* Go is an ancient strategic board game originating in China
* Patolli is a board game originating in mesoamerica and played by the ancient mayans.
* The Royal Tombs of Ur contained, among others, the Royal Game of Ur. They were excavated by Leonard Woolley, but his books document little on the games found. Most of the games he excavated are now housed in the British Museum in London.
* Buddha games list is the earliest known list of games.
